What you'll do Under the supervision of the Point-of-Care Laboratory Services Supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist - Point of Care (POC) will provide technical oversight of POCT and work collaboratively with hospital personnel, providers, and Clinical Pathology in the validation, training, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and execution of process improvement of authorized POCT throughout Bassett Healthcare Network. Develops and maintains a quality management system for POCT that assures quality and meets regulatory requirements. Coordinates/participates in required method comparisons, instrument validations, linearity checks, end user training, and competency assessments. Develops, writes, and revises Bassett Healthcare Network policies and procedures in compliance with NYSDOH and DNV regulatory requirements. Serves as technical consultant to help troubleshoot moderate and waived POC testing and computer issues. Trains staff in POC testing and assures staff maintain annual competency. Performs site visits to ensure sites are meeting POC regulatory requirements. Manages supply chain for POC testing supplies. Maintains POC testing equipment and instruments. Maintains organized records of training, competency, site visits, and technical issues. Remains up to date on POC regulations, manufacturer’s instructions, and best practices. Builds and maintains positive relationships with POC testing sites leadership and staff. Supports and/or leads improvement projects to optimize quality and efficiency. May performs clinical laboratory procedures and examinations and any other tests or procedures conducted by a clinical laboratory, including maintaining equipment and records, and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance, and which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, as determined by the department. May perform microbiological, virological, serological, chemical, immunohematological, hematological, biophysical, cytogenetical, cytological or histological procedures and examinations and any other test or procedure conducted by a laboratory as defined by title five of article five of the public health law, on material derived from the human body which provides information for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of a disease or assessment of a human medical condition. Blood banking would include the collection, processing, storage and/or distribution of human blood, blood components or blood derivatives. Coordinates all laboratory testing outside the main laboratory, within the Bassett Laboratory Network and according to regulations. Assists with the technical validity of test methods used at POC sites with respect to linearity and crossover studies as assigned by the Laboratory Network Point of Care Technical Specialist or Laboratory Manager within the timeframe assigned and as observed by supervisor. Writes and updates procedures for POC testing in accordance with NCCLS standards in an easily understandable form for testing staff studies as assigned by the Laboratory Network Point of Care Technical Specialist within the timeframe assigned and as observed by supervisor. Follows up with staff within 3 days of identifying error with data management system when assigned as noted on documentation log by supervisor. Assists with training, competence and proficiency programs of Bassett personnel involved in POC testing, for staff to meet regulatory requirements, keeping all personnel compliant within 30 days of employment or training anniversary as documented in the Training/Competency data base. Responds to customer’s needs within 24 hours of the receipt of a request 95% of the time as noted in the departmental log as observed by the supervisor. Handles crisis situations professionally. Usually remains calm under stressful situation as indicated by staff feedback and/or observed by supervisor. Utilizes time efficiently and usually offers to help others when work in assigned area is complete as indicated by staff feedback and/or observed by supervisor. Directs the purchasing/requisitioning of lab supplies/equipment when supplies are noted to be low so as not to overstock or exhaust supplies as noted by direct observation and testing personnel feedback. Sets an example in work performance and team building, concern for patients and co-workers by maintaining a positive interpersonal approach and demeanor, as observed by the manager. Establishes regular site visits to assigned Bassett POC testing sites to meet regulatory requirements (QC and PT review) as well as customer needs and to assure quality testing. Documents outcome of all regularly scheduled site visits, and sends copy to site manager within 1 week, as evidenced by feedback from managers and direct observation. Assures procedures in use at each site are current and followed by staff at location as noted on the site report as observed by supervisor. Reviews all quality control and proficiency test results within 2-3 days of receipt to assure established protocols are followed and required laboratory licenses are maintained as noted by regulatory surveys and within the data management system. Reviews all test results in accordance with state and federal regulations at least bimonthly. Identifies and resolves all problems following established policies as noted by regulatory surveys. Assures appropriate records are kept. Assures only qualified personnel are performing testing at each site. Maintains current equipment and participates in the investigation of new products, equipment and instruments required in performance of job responsibilities. Performs and documents scheduled instrument maintenance and validations following approved procedures and within the defined frequency, as evidenced from feedback from managers, testing personnel, and other members of the POC team. Identifies instrument problems and handles troubleshooting, calls for technical assistance, and documentation to provide seamless service to patients, providers, and POC operators, as noted by direct feedback from technical specialists, providers, and testing personnel. Investigates new point of care products and methodologies as noted on the AACC list serve and professional magazines, making recommendations as needed to the POC team based on quality, cost, and clinical utility, as noted by supervisor. Required responsibilities for all clinical laboratory positions. Completes the laboratory safety exam on an annual basis and achieves a score of 90%. Completes the laboratory compliance exam on an annual basis and achieves a score of 90%. Completes 1 hour of compliance training annually as defined by the department. Attains and documents at least 22 units of continuing education annually as defined by departmental policy. Attends at least 75% of department staff meetings. Review minutes of missed meetings and departmental communication meetings as noted by documentation on the minutes. Keeps the supervisor and Laboratory Network Point of Care Technical Specialist informed and communicates effectively to ensure vital patient and operational information is usually shared among co-workers appropriately as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor. Maintains technical competence within areas of responsibility by completing annual competency requirements as defined by departmental policy and documented within the department. Understands the existing and potential hazard in the work area in such a way as to prevent injury/illness by following hospital and laboratory health and safety policies and procedures 100% of the time as indicated by departmental feedback and/or observed by supervisor. Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager. What we need from you Education: 4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology, Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences, required Master's Degree Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences, preferred Experience: Minimum 1 year experience in standard laboratory methodologies (work or school), required Minimum 1 year experience in Point of Care Testing (POCT) , preferred Licensure/Certifications: Clinical Laboratory Technician or Technologist License, required Skills: Accountability Accuracy Communication Computer Skills Project Management/Planning Reading/Writing/Comprehension Training Time Management Physical Requirements: Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
