Job Description

A high end Italian American restaurant in Manhattan seeks a talented Sous Chef to join the Culinary team.


A little about the position:

The Sous Chef assists the Executive Chef in overseeing the daily kitchen operations, including food preparation, quality control and maintaining kitchen hygiene standards. The Sous Chef is responsible for supervising kitchen staff, ensuring a smooth workflow and executing dishes according to established recipes and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervising Kitchen Staff:

    • Manage kitchen personnel, including line cooks, prep cooks and dishwashers, ensuring they follow proper cooking techniques and food safety standards.
    • Train new kitchen staff on cooking techniques, food presentation and safety practices.
    • Ensure staff are motivated, focused and working efficiently.
  2. Quality Control:

    • Monitor the preparation and presentation of food to ensure consistency and adherence to recipes.
    • Conduct taste tests and inspect finished dishes before they are sent out to customers.
    • Ensure food quality meets health and safety standards.
  3. Maintaining Kitchen Organization:

    • Help maintain a clean and organized kitchen, ensuring proper storage of ingredients, inventory management and adherence to sanitation regulations.
    • Ensure the proper functioning of kitchen equipment and report any issues to the Executive Chef and Maintenance.
  4. Food Inventory Management:

    • Assist in inventory control, including ordering supplies, managing stock levels and minimizing waste.
    • Work with the Executive Chef to forecast and plan food needs based on menu requirements and restaurant volume.
  5. Health and Safety Compliance:

    • Ensure the kitchen adheres to food safety regulations, including proper storage, handling and cooking of food.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen and ensure staff follows all health and safety procedures.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience : 3-5 years of experience in a professional kitchen, preferably in a supervisory role.
  • Culinary Knowledge : Deep understanding of culinary techniques, kitchen equipment, and food preparation.
  • Leadership Skills : Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, managing conflict and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Time Management : Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical Stamina : Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Food Safety Certifications : Knowledge of food safety regulations and certifications (e.g., ServSafe).
  • Communication : Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with kitchen staff and other team members.  Conversational Spanish 

  • Hours : Must be available to work mornings, nights, weekends and/or holidays, as required by business demands
