Risk Manager – Contracts and Claims

McKeil Marine is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Risk Manager – Contracts & Claims, preferably with experience within the marine, insurance, or legal/paralegal sectors to direct our contract management, claims handling, and incident reporting processes. The successful candidate will also promote and maintain a critical documents library using e-signature workflow applications and other digital platforms, ensuring efficient document handling across the organization. The incumbent would work closely with different departments like Commercial, Operations and Operational Risk Management and would be reporting directly to CFO.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Contract Management:

  • Manage and review contracts related to shipping, chartering, and other marine services, to ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and legal, insurance and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with external legal counsel and insurance brokers on contract related legal, contract disputes, and insurance issues.
  • Maintain a centralized repository for all contracts, tracking key deadlines, renewals, and amendments.
  • Communicate key updates to the executive team regarding contract status and legal risks or developments.

Claims Handling and Incident Reporting:

  • Work closely with internal teams to gather incident details and submit accurate reports to regulatory bodies, insurers and legal counsel.
  • Manage the documentation and reporting of incidents, including marine-related accidents, property damage, and liability claims.
  • Liaise with insurance brokers to submit and track claims, ensuring prompt processing and resolution.
  • Monitor claims progress, providing updates to the operations team and executive leadership, and assisting in claims dispute resolution.
  • Provide legal support and coordinate with external legal counsel on claims-related legal matters, including dispute resolution. Where necessary, assist the legal team with incident investigation, research and gathering evidence, and preparing for potential legal action.


Risk Management and Insurance Coordination:

  • Collaborate with the insurance team to ensure that all contracts are properly insured and that appropriate risk mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Support the review of insurance policies, ensuring they meet contract requirements and business objectives.
  • Liaise between operations, insurance, and legal departments to ensure alignment on contract terms, claims handling, and incident reporting.


Promote and Maintain Critical Documents Library:

  • Develop and maintain a centralized critical documents library for contracts, agreements, claims, and other key documents.
  • Utilize e-signature workflow applications (e.g., DocuSign, Adobe Sign) and other platforms to streamline the review, approval, and signature processes for contracts and related documentation.
  • Ensure easy access to documents across departments and maintain version control and security of sensitive information.

Qualification, Skills and Key Competencies Required:

Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field (paralegal).

Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience in contract management, with a focus on claims or incident reporting in the marine, insurance, or legal sectors.
  • Familiarity with contracts of affreightment (COAs), BIMCO, ECTOA, and other maritime agreements.
  • Experience promoting and maintaining document management systems, including e-signature workflow applications.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of maritime operations, insurance regulations, claims handling, and incident reporting processes.
  • Excellent understanding of contract law and the ability to interpret complex legal agreements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, contract management, claims management software, and e-signature platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information to executives and external partners, while building strong and effective relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple contracts and claims concurrently.
  • Ability to handle sensitive documents with discretion, maintain security protocols, and ensure efficient workflow management.
  • A proactive approach with strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and risk mitigation abilities.
