The Pediatric Phlebotomist will play a vital role in ensuring patient comfort and procedural accuracy while collecting blood samples from infants, children, and adolescents. This position requires technical expertise in phlebotomy, a calm and empathetic approach to working with children, and a collaborative mindset to support our clinical team.
Pediatric Phlebotomist
Location: Boston, MA
Employment Type: Full Time (32-40 hours per week)
Key Responsibilities:
Blood Collection:
- Perform venipuncture, heel sticks, or finger sticks to obtain blood samples from pediatric patients.
- Ensure accurate labeling and proper handling of blood samples for laboratory testing.
- Maintain sterile techniques and follow all safety protocols during procedures.
- Prepare specimens for processing and conduct CLIA-waived testing in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
Patient Care:
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to children and their parents or guardians to minimize anxiety during procedures.
- Utilize child-friendly communication and distraction techniques to create a positive experience for young patients.
- Monitor patients for any adverse reactions and ensure their comfort post-procedure.
Administrative Support:
- Accurately document patient information and blood draw details.
- Collaborate with laboratory personnel to ensure timely processing of samples.
- Assist with patient check-in and verify patient identity and orders for blood work.
- Participate in cross-training for additional clinical and administrative responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
Required Skills & Certifications:
- Certification in phlebotomy (e.g., CPT).
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
- Experience performing CLIA-waived testing.
Preferred:
- Certification as a Medical Assistant.
- Experience working with pediatric patients in a hospital, private laboratory, or medical office setting (minimum 1 year).
Soft Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with children and parents.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and empathetic under pressure.
- A child-friendly and supportive demeanor.
Position Highlights:
- Schedule: Flexible 32-40 hours/week, built around candidate availability. Options for consistent weekly schedules or a 4-day workweek. Occasional weekend availability is a bonus but not required.
- Compensation:
- Phlebotomy certification only: $25-$26/hour.
- Phlebotomy + Medical Assistant certification: $27-$28/hour.
- Pediatric experience is highly preferred.
- Location: Fully onsite in Boston, MA.
