Job Description

About NLIHC:

At the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), we believe that housing is a human right and a foundation for a just society. We are steadfast in our mission to achieve racially and socially equitable public policies that ensure individuals with the lowest incomes have access to quality, affordable homes in communities of their choice. Together, we are working to build a future where everyone has a safe, stable place to call home.

Position Overview: NLIHC is seeking a visionary and strategic Fund Development Director to lead and elevate our fundraising efforts. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Vice President of External Affairs to design and implement multi-year fundraising strategies that fuel our mission and expand our impact. This is an opportunity to inspire generosity and engagement among a diverse base of donors, partners, and stakeholders while leading a talented development team. Reporting directly to the Vice President of External Affairs, the Fund Development Director will supervise two dedicated Fund Development staff.

Why Join Us? At NLIHC, you will be part of a mission-driven team that is transforming lives and communities. As Fund Development Director, you will play a pivotal role in creating systemic change, fostering generosity, and ensuring that the most vulnerable among us have a place to call home. Join us in making a lasting impact—one home, one policy, one community at a time.

What You Bring:

· An ability to inspire and align stakeholders around NLIHC’s mission and vision.

· A strategic mindset with a proven track record of achieving ambitious fundraising goals.

· Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to tell compelling stories that connect donors to our impact.

· A collaborative spirit and the ability to lead and empower teams.

· A commitment to equity and a deep understanding of how housing intersects with racial and social justice.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

· Design and execute a comprehensive multi-year fundraising strategy that accelerates growth in annual giving.

· Develop and expand planned giving initiatives, ensuring a sustainable revenue pipeline.

· Oversee major donor engagement, creating meaningful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans.

· Evaluate and report on progress toward fundraising goals, providing actionable insights to the CEO and VP of External Affairs.

Donor Engagement:

· Cultivate lasting relationships with current and prospective donors, tailoring engagement strategies to their unique interests and passions.

· Lead grant-seeking efforts, including research, application submissions, and post-award reporting.

· Manage systems and tools, such as Salesforce, to optimize donor management and ensure seamless fundraising operations.

· Collaborate with the communications team to craft compelling donor-focused content, including print, digital, and social media campaigns.

Team Collaboration & Event Leadership:

· Partner across teams to ensure consistent brand representation and messaging in all outreach efforts.

· Plan and oversee impactful fundraising events, donor receptions, and special campaigns.

· Work closely with the Board’s Fund Development Committee to secure event sponsorships and enhance donor experiences.

Operational Excellence:

· Implement and oversee policies for gift recognition, reporting, and donor stewardship.

· Manage financial reporting related to fundraising, ensuring transparency and accuracy in collaboration with the finance team.

· Maintain meticulous records of proposals, reports, and donor engagement histories to foster long-term relationships.

Qualifications:

· Location: Must be based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

· Experience: Minimum five (5) years in Fund Development and three (3) years in a leadership/management role.

· Education: Bachelor’s degree required.

· Commitment: Strong alignment with NLIHC’s mission and a passion for social justice.

· Technical Expertise: Proficiency in Salesforce and grant writing is essential.

· Knowledge Areas: Expertise in philanthropy, giving trends, fundraising strategies, data analytics, gift processing, donor research, and reporting best practices.
