POSITION TITLE:

Paralegal


REPORTS TO:

Managing Paralegal/COO


WORK LOCATION:

Pickering, ON


JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

The Paralegal will provide legal advice pertaining to all legal areas within scope at Defend-it Legal Services. The Paralegal will be the support and back-up to the Managing Paralegal by taking on and assisting client files in POA, Landlord and Tenant, Small Claims, Human Rights, Legal Letters and much more. Will draft or assist with the drafting of documents to be used in a proceeding. Will negotiate on behalf of a client who is a party to a proceeding.


Responsibilities:

- Begin a client matter from start to finish

- Conducting legal research and analysis

- Drafting a variety of legal documents, notwithstanding Schedule A’s, legal letters, legal briefs, etc.

- Attending small claims and POA court, Landlord and tenant hearing, HRTO and other tribunals as required

- Liaise with the business to help handle litigation/dispute matters, locate documents, collect data, and much more

- Court filings and other filings as required

- Organizing files, correspondence and related documents electronically

- Organizing and maintaining data management system, including knowledge management of research, legal opinions, decisions, etc.

- Assisting with other legal and administrative tasks as assigned, which can include answering phones new file creation, filing, etc.

- Keeping abreast of legislative updates and recent relevant decisions and providing timely updates to the legal team and its clients

- Other responsibilities as assigned


KEY SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Job Knowledge or Work Experience:

- 2 plus years of experience in working in a paralegal or law firm

- Licenced paralegal in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario


Skills/Abilities:

- Strong oral and written communication skills.

- Excellent organizational skills.

- Must be able to effectively multi-task, manage time-sensitive documents and have exceptional organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.

- Must be able to function effectively in a busy, team-oriented environment.

- Office administration experience.


Education:

- Bachelors’ degree in business, law and/or any other related field

- Paralegal certificate from an accredited College


EXPECTED RESULTS, KEY OBJECTIVES:

The Paralegal will be expected to eventually conduct their own consultation meetings with clients and be responsible of the client's matter from start to finish.
