General Purpose of Job: A registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designed time frame and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, nursing process, the environment/instrumentation and other health care team members. Operates within the Driscoll Children's Hospital mission, vision and values.
Continuity of Care: Pediatric oncology patients require consistent and specialized care. A gap in staffing can disrupt the continuity of care, leading to potential negative outcomes for our patients. Replacing the RN is crucial to maintaining the high standard of care that these vulnerable patients need.
Specialized Skills: The complexity of pediatric oncology care demands a nurse with specialized training and experience. Replacing the outgoing RN ensures that our team remains equipped to handle the unique challenges of treating children with cancer and blood disorders.
Patient Safety: Patient safety is our top priority. Adequate staffing levels are essential to avoid overburdening the remaining team members, which could lead to errors or omissions in patient care. A replacement will help maintain safe nurse-to-patient ratios.
Support for Multidisciplinary Team: The pediatric oncology nurse plays a vital role in the multidisciplinary team, collaborating with physicians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. A replacement is necessary to support this teamwork and ensure that all aspects of patient care are covered
Family Support: Families of pediatric oncology patients often require significant emotional and educational support. The RN in this role is critical in providing that support, helping families navigate the complexities of treatment, and ensuring they feel supported throughout the process.
Ongoing Care Coordination: The RN in the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is responsible for coordinating complex care plans, including chemotherapy, transfusions, and other treatments. Replacing the nurse is essential to maintain seamless coordination and avoid any delays in treatment.
Compliance and Accreditation: Our center must adhere to strict regulatory standards and accreditation requirements, which include maintaining appropriate staffing levels. Replacing the pediatric oncology nurse is necessary to remain compliant and uphold our accreditation status. (such as Joint Commission)
Staff Morale and Retention: The current team may experience increased stress and burnout if they are required to cover additional shifts or responsibilities due to a vacancy. Replacing the nurse promptly helps maintain staff morale and reduces the risk of turnover among other team members.
Education and/or Experience: - Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
- Successful completion of DCH IV Therapy Certification Course. Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation techniques. Successful completion of DCH Orientation Crouse, Code Management, HIS/LIS courses, medication orientation course. Special training in the use of chemotherapeutic agents.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Current Texas RN License
- PALS within one year of hire date (will attend PALS as per availability)
- CPR Certification
- Advanced practice national certification encouraged
- Chemotherapy certification within 1 year of hire date
