Job Description:
- Prepares patient specimens for laboratory testing, focusing on pre-analytic and post-analytic processes
- Enters patient demographic and test order information accurately and timely into lab information systems
- Interacts with patients, laboratory staff, and caregivers professionally and courteously
- Reviews laboratory request forms for completeness and resolves any discrepancies
- Performs CLIA waived tests within competency and supervisor approval
- Complies with departmental policies, quality assessments, safety, and infection control standards
- Assists in training employees and students, attends department continuing education programs
- May perform blood sample collection and phlebotomy occasionally
- Instructs patients and health care staff on proper lab specimen collection and handling
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks, transports specimens, operates equipment, and maintains records
- Other duties as required to maintain operations
Skills:
- Regularly exposed to disease-bearing specimens and occasional radiation hazards
- Capable of standing and walking for prolonged periods
- Proficient in computer order entry and accuracy
- Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Education/Experience Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Ability to follow instructions and demonstrate exceptional customer service skills
- For phlebotomy roles, a minimum of two months training and experience is required
- Valid Michigan motor vehicle license for off-site travel
- Experience in hospital or clinic laboratory preferred
- Familiarity with medical terminology preferred
- Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities
