Description of Job
Summary of Job Classification: The Clerk of the Court of Appeals is responsible for providing for the administration of all aspects of the Court of Appeals. This involves supervising court employees, providing case flow management, and participating in the design, acquisition, and implementation of automation for Court of Appeals processes and proceedings. This position will also develop and implement new policies or policy changes in conjunction with Court of Appeals judges and staff.

  • Responsible for the overall direction and supervision of the Court of Appeals.
  • Supervises and directs one or more groups of employees including but not limited to Clerk's Office staff, Staff Attorneys assigned to the Clerk's Office, and other administrative staff for the Court of Appeals.
  • Advises judges, staff attorneys, and law clerks on legal matters such as appellate jurisdictional issues.
  • Provides case flow management in conjunction with the Clerk's office staff, ensuring proper docket management.
  • Develops and implements new policies in conjunction with Court of Appeals judges and staff.
  • Implements policy changes from the State Court Administrator's Office and Chief Justice Directives.
  • Responsible for recruitment, selection and termination of Court of Appeals employees.
  • Develops and manages the budget, purchasing and accounting functions. Authorizes expenditures.
  • Participates in the design, acquisition, and implementation of automation for Court of Appeals processes and proceedings.
  • Provides facility maintenance and space needs, ensuring that staff have adequate equipment and safe working environment.
  • Coordinates the activities of the Court of Appeals and maintains productive relationships with judges, State Court Administrator's Office personnel, other courts, the bar association, law enforcement agencies, general public, and correction institutions.
  • Apprises the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals on all administrative matters.
  • Attends meetings and completes training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Fiscal Responsibility:
Position has assigned Judicial District-wide fiscal responsibility.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
This position is subject to many interruptions and may be required to handle multiple calls and inquiries at once. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Work Location:
Office or similar indoor environment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Education and Experience Equivalency:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in business, public or court administration from an accredited four-year college or university and five years of professional administrative experience, of which two years must have been in court administration.
OR
Nine years of work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education, of which two years must have been in court administration.
OR
Graduation from an accredited law school; possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado; eligibility to practice law before the courts of the State of Colorado and five years of experience with an appellate court and of which two years must have been in court administration
Licenses and Certifications:
None.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited law school; possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado; eligibility to practice law before the courts of the State of Colorado and experience in appellate law or a degree in public administration or court administration/court management certification preferred.
