Job Description

There’s work and there’s your life’s work.

Your life’s work ignites a spark that fuels your passion. Your life’s work grabs you by your soul and won’t let go. You are an impact maker.

People join The Harwood Institute to create real, lasting change. The Institute is part of a long tradition of small, catalytic organizations throughout American history that have worked to strengthen and advance our society to create a more equitable, hopeful future for all. The Institute works to create breakthroughs on how to address societal challenges and strengthen civic culture.

We’re looking for a creative, persistent, and optimistic individual to drive our social media content ideation, creation, and dissemination. This is a critical position at the Institute. Our national network of evangelists and changemakers who believe in community-led change is growing fast and our work is scaling nationwide. We seek an individual who will help us break through on various social media channels.

Our task is to position Rich as a civic champion and spread hopeful, relevant, and important messages and content. Rich and the Institute believe deeply that a new civic path forward—not more divisive politics—is the real way to create change in our country. We need to engage people with alternative messages of hope and possibility. That’s where you come in.

You will work closely with the Institute’s founder Rich Harwood; various team members, including our Director of Network Engagement, Media and Creative Content Manager, and Digital Media Manager; local partners; and changemakers across the country.

You are a creative content producer with a knack for and interest in social media. You want to exercise and express your creative talents through different mediums. You are mission-driven and motivated by generating impact. You are collaborative and energetic, and you get excited to figure things out. You love engaging people, enjoy problem solving, and place a premium on making things happen. You want to amplify the voice of a national civic leader and an innovative catalytic organization. You want to work in a fast-paced environment on a small, entrepreneurial team. You take initiative, build relationships, break through the noise, and get results. If this sounds like you, let’s explore working together.

Responsibilities

  • Craft social media strategy and manage all of Rich Harwood and the Institute’s various social media platforms
  • Create and capture content working directly with Rich Harwood and others
  • Spread inspiring and practical messages, social media graphics, and other content that engage people, show how communities are creating change, and foster attachment to Rich Harwood and The Harwood institute
  • Position Rich Harwood and the Institute as a trusted civic voice by spreading and amplifying our messages, articles, books, and speaking events
  • Grow follower count and engagement over time across key platforms

Demonstrated Candidate Characteristics

  • Track record of enterprising work, especially in social and digital media
  • Strong decision maker, relationship builder, strategizer, manager, organizer, and scout
  • Creative self-starter who is ready to seize opportunities
  • Clear, direct written and verbal communicator
  • Avid social media and news consumer, with an interest in and understanding of the full landscape and its evolving trends
  • Able to leverage assets and successes to amplify messages and bring people into our network
  • Culturally aware and sensitive
  • Keen interest in and a basic understanding of community change
  • Able to juggle multiple responsibilities and deliverables at once
  • Comfortable saying no, giving and receiving direct feedback, working with others to course-correct or make adjustments
