What’s the job?

The regional Senior Automation Engineer will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, production, processing methods and controls in a manner consistent with CertainTeed Gypsum in our manufacturing facilities across Canada. This position will provide leadership and innovation in the implementation of strategic initiatives and capital projects related to process, automation, power/electrical and database systems. This position will also assist management in developing manufacturing business plans and evaluating new innovative technologies to enhance our current systems.

  • Reports directly to the Capital Program Manager and is a member of the Canadian Central Engineering team.
  • “Hands-On” problem solver capable of providing on-site and remote support to multiple plants in order to solve complex automation related issues.
  • Responsibilities include the designing or development of new process control systems and revising / maintaining of existing processes; developing and implementing WCM projects; managing and guiding contractors, consultants and suppliers; identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
  • Planning and scheduling of projects and preparing capital expenditures.
  • Provides technical expertise, support and enhancement of automation related systems (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Machinery Safety / Data and Voice Networks / plant electrical distribution systems) and implements required updates to avoid technical obsolescence.
  • Assists plant maintenance teams with any difficult troubleshooting issues.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.
  • Ensures full documentation of all projects and systems to WCM / Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.
  • Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and flow charts required for the proper and efficient operation of plant equipment.
  • Creates and provides training for other automation engineers, operators and maintenance personnel for project hand-off to plant.


What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Ten (10) years of applied professional experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) / PLC and power distribution (up to 4160VAC.)
  • Applied professional experience with electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial protocols / networking (switching & routing) and databases.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian Standards (CSA) for Electrical, Machinery Safety, Arc-Flash (NFPA-70), Burner Flame Safety (NFPA-86) code requirements and combustion controls.
  • Expertise in PLC & HMI programming and all aspects of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Agile, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
