West Area Engineer

This position will plan, coordinate, develop, and lead activities within the west area of the Metropolitan District, focused on Hennepin County. This position is the primary contact in concert with the West Area Manager for other public agencies, special interest groups and the public regarding project activities. The position serves a critical role in maintaining effective long-term relationships with local units of government. Duties vary based on project complexity and whether project is MnDOT or locally led. This position also serves a critical internal function to identify and resolve local issues and concerns with various MnDOT functional groups. In many instances the position is tasked with balancing these external and internal considerations in a manner that advances and respects department and local priorities.
A summary of principal responsibilities and tasks is as follows:
- Provide inception to completion project management for Metro District and locally led projects in Hennepin County, including providing technical direction, defining scope, refining alternatives, developing plans and schedules, directing the project team, and coordination of contracting consultants.
- Lead, facilities, and negotiate agreements with various units of government.
- Provide lead direction in project planning efforts to address various infrastructure needs.
- Plan and conduct a variety of public engagement activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications for Engineer Principal:
- Three (3) years of post-registration engineering experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of Pre-design, Final Design, Planning, Traffic, State Aid and Construction.
Minimum Qualifications for BOTH Engineer Principal AND Engineer Senior:
- Licensure as a professional civil engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or ability to obtain licensure through Comity (Reciprocity).
- Experience in project management sufficient to prioritize and schedule multiple projects to meet letting schedules and to manage budgets and staff.
- Knowledge of MnDOT standards and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies and codes as they relate to transportation system planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation.
- NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in planning, Human Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field may substitute for six months of experience.
