The Role
Location: Baltimore, Maryland (hybrid)
Reports to: Reports directly to JHM Senior Vice President of Patient Safety & Quality.
To achieve a comprehensive health equity agenda for the enterprise, collaborates with and is accountable to the JHM CEO/Dean of School of Medicine and President JHHS, Executive Vice President, JHM.
Collaborates with: VP Safety and Quality, VP Diversity and Inclusion, VP Population Health,
Physician in Chief/Vice Dean for clinical affairs, Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians
Overview: The Chief Health Equity Officer (CHEO) will lead efforts to advance health equity across Johns Hopkins Medicine.
This leader will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to eliminate health disparities, improve patient outcomes for underserved populations, and foster an inclusive environment for both patients and employees.
The Chief Health Equity Officer will:
- Collaborate across clinical, administrative, and community outreach teams to ensure that equity is a core and fully integrated priority in all health services provided by JHM, including our efforts to improve quality, safety and patient experience.
- Work to position JHM as a national leader on equitable care delivery, advancing the research base, and policy advocacy.
Major Responsibilities:
Health Equity Strategy Development: Design and implement a comprehensive health equity plan to address disparities in care outcomes, access to services, and social determinants of health within the enterprise.
- Develop and lead implementation of a comprehensive health equity strategy aligned with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
- Serve as a thought leader and advisor to the JHM executive team on health equity issues.
- Establish metrics and benchmarks to measure the effectiveness of health equity initiatives.
Community Engagement and Advocacy: Work with community leaders and stakeholders to ensure the voices and needs of underserved populations are heard and addressed.
- Build relationships with external organizations, community groups, and other stakeholders to promote health equity.
- Collaborate with external partners to support health equity initiatives and community engagement.
- Build structures to meaningfully engage patients from historically marginalized communities for their input and feedback, to ensure that their voices shape key policies and practices that impact their health and well-being.
Leadership and Collaboration: Serve as a senior advisor on equity issues and collaborate with various departments (e.g., clinical, human resources, research) to integrate health equity into organizational priorities.
- Design and implement programs and initiatives to address health disparities and promote equitable health outcomes.
- Promote awareness and understanding of health equity issues through training and education programs for staff and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to integrate health equity principles into care delivery and organizational practices.
Data and Performance Analysis: Develop metrics and analyze data on patient outcomes and community health trends to identify inequities and to drive continuous improvement and report on progress.
- Collect, analyze, and report on data related to health disparities and health equity program outcomes.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the executive team on health equity progress.
- Utilize data to identify areas for improvement and inform decision-making.
Policy and Program Development: Advise on the development of policies and programs aimed at improving access to care and health outcomes for marginalized communities.
- Review and revise policies and practices to ensure they promote health equity and address social determinants of health.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to health equity and nondiscrimination.
- Collaborate with other senior executives to address and resolve health equity-related issues and complaints.
Cultural Competency: Lead initiatives to enhance the cultural competency of the workforce through training programs and greater transparency on areas needing improvement.
Research and Innovation: Promote and participate in health equity research initiatives to identify best practices and innovative solutions for reducing health disparities in healthcare delivery at a local & national level
The Leader:
Experience And Qualification:
- MD, DO, PhD or equivalent advanced degree in a related health field preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in health equity, public health, or healthcare administration, preferred
- Proven experience in developing and leading health equity initiatives in a healthcare setting.
- Experience in an academic medical center or health system preferred
- Research experience in health disparities or population health preferred
- Strong understanding of healthcare systems, social determinants of health, and community health needs.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and community partners.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, culturally competent environment.
- Possess experience with data collection/analyses and research methods, as well as a track record working with faculty, academic, and administrative leaders is crucial.
- Proven abilities to collaborate and work successfully with multiple constituents in the delivery and coordination of programs and initiatives.
- Must have a high degree of cultural intelligence and technical mastery of strategy in academic medicine or related industry
- Ability to successfully navigate the hierarchy, tradition, competitiveness, and at times, the exclusionary culture of academic medicine.
- Demonstrated sensitivity and diplomacy.

Compensation:
- The position base range is $300,000 - $350,000 with a 25% target incentive bonus
