Job Description

The Electrical Technician reports directly to the VP of Field Services and performs a range of electrical tasks pertaining to the installation, testing and commissioning of high and low voltage electrical equipment: Switchgear, MCC’s, Transformers, Breakers, Protective Relays. 


Position – Full-time, Exempt

Location – Houston, TX

Travel – 20-50%


Typical tasks include:

Electrical Apparatus Testing

  • Function testing and trouble shooting control circuits.
  • Operating test equipment to measure: Power Factor, Dielectric Withstand, Winding Resistance, Ratio, Insulation Resistance, Contact Resistance, Fall of Potential, etc.
  • Analyzing test results to determine health of the electrical system.

Protective Relay Services

  • Read/Write protective relay settings (Multilin, SEL, ABB, Basler, Beckwith).
  • Perform function testing of breaker control circuits.
  • Review vendor equipment drawings and data submittals for accuracy. Participate in factory acceptance testing at equipment manufacturer facilities.
  • Perform relay testing using a relay test set (Doble or Omicron)

Light Electrical Construction

  • Modify/Re-wire breaker or contactor motor control circuits, relays, and control panels.
  • Install short runs of conduit or cable tray and install new panelboard breakers, electrical circuits.


Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Technical School training, Bachelors in Engineering Technology or Engineering preferred.
  • Commitment to safety.
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to work directly with clients during project execution.
  • Ability to learn and apply new skills.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical equipment, transformers, breakers, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity, voltage and current.
  • Skill with basic hand tools used in electrical installation and termination of control wiring.
  • Able to lift and move 50lbs.
  • Currently hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

The role reports to Field Service Manager and is located in Houston, TX. As an Electrical Technician, you will be responsible for verifying the safety and readiness of high and low voltage electrical systems. 


Workplace Requirements:

Due to the nature of our work, all employees must be capable, eligible, and willing to visit our clients at their industrial facilities. This entails a willingness and ability to travel, wear the required personal protective equipment, and comply with our safety policies as well as those of our clients.


Drug & Alcohol Testing: 

Drug and alcohol screening may be required at employment initiation and periodically thereafter as required to meet our client requirements. This testing is performed in accordance with state and federal requirements and as defined by client drug and alcohol testing requirements. Failure to pass a drug or alcohol test, refusing to submit to testing, and/or providing an adulterated or substituted sample, will be cause for termination where not contrary to law.


Background Checks:  

Background checks will be completed by R3P at employment initiation and periodically thereafter as required to meet our client requirements. The results of background checks will be kept confidential and will not be actionable unless they reveal information that would make the employee ineligible for client site access.


Travel Requirements: 

R3P employees must be willing and able to travel by driving or flying to client facilities and other R3P offices. For R3P employees to drive as a course of their employment they must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable through R3P’s insurance provider. You must be willing and able to drive your own properly registered and insured vehicle. Any negative incidents such as speeding tickets or DUI’s could prevent an employee from being insurable as a driver of an R3P or rental vehicle. Must also meet all requirements to fly with commercial airlines without restriction.

 

Language Skills

Because Root 3 Power maintains strict adherence to company policies and procedures, for an individual to perform this job successfully, he/she must have the ability to speak, write and understand English. Ability to read, communicate, interpret, and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, and memos, both electronically and in written form.


Physical Demands

Must be willing and able to complete accurate field testing in heavy industrial environment. This includes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), physically able to walk over uneven surfaces, work from elevated surfaces, and navigate around or climb on industrial equipment (i.e. climbing pipe racks, ladders, stairs, etc.)


While performing the duties of this job, the Technician is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The Technician is occasionally required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The technician must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Your responsibilities:

  • Safely work in industrial green field and brown field areas.
  • Complete all R3P and client safety/work approval forms daily.
  • Perform basic, light electrical construction, operate electrical test equipment, operate software to write configuration files and retrieve recorded information from devices used in metering and control of electrical power, and develop documentation of test results.
  • Perform testing of electrical equipment and analyze the test data.
  • Develop job reports for clients that include all the work performed on the job.
  • Responsible for completing tasks within the project timeline and budget.


Candidate Background

  • High School diploma. (Electrical training from apprenticeship or technical school preferred).
  • Willingness to work in a multi-task environment.
  • The ideal candidate is committed to the electrical craft, has a positive attitude, has demonstrated technical aptitude through previous experience, wants to learn by working closely with Senior Technicians and Engineers to build a career and a reputation as an exemplary electrical technician.
  • Willingness to perform work out-of-office (industrial or large commercial facility) as required.
  • Travel up to 50% domestic travel requiring hotel stays.
  • Must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for Root 3 Power in the United States of America.
