The Chief Estimator is responsible for overseeing the entire estimating process for mechanical/industrial projects, including managing a team of estimators, analyzing project plans, determining project costs, and ensuring accurate and timely bids are submitted to clients, all while aiming to maximize profitability for the company.
Responsibilities:
Leading the Estimating Team:
Manage estimator/s, assigning projects, reviewing their work, and providing guidance on complex estimating challenges.
Project Analysis:
Thoroughly review project plans, specifications, and site conditions to accurately assess project scope and potential risks.
Cost Estimation:
Develop detailed cost breakdowns for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and contingencies, considering market conditions and current pricing.
Quantity Take-Offs:
Perform precise quantity take-offs from blueprints to accurately calculate material requirements.
Bid Preparation:
Assemble comprehensive bid packages including detailed cost estimates, project schedules, and proposal documents.
Subcontractor Management:
Collaborate with subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and ensure accurate scope of work.
Value Engineering:
Identify potential cost-saving opportunities during the estimating process through design suggestions or material substitutions.
Profit Margin Analysis:
Determine appropriate profit margins based on project complexity, market factors, and company goals.
Client Presentations:
Present bids to potential clients, addressing questions and concerns regarding the estimate as required.
Risk Assessment:
Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies to manage project costs.
Qualifications:
Construction Knowledge:
Deep understanding of construction methods, materials, industry standards, and project delivery methods as it relates to the plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, and process piping scopes.
Estimating Software Proficiency:
Expertise in FastPipe estimating software. Leadership Abilities: Proven ability to lead and mentor an individual estimator or team of estimators.
Analytical Skills:
Strong analytical skills to interpret complex project documents and make informed cost projections.
Communication Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
Attention to Detail:
High level of accuracy and attention to detail to ensure precise cost estimates.
Relevant Education:
Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field or a combination of education and/or experience.
Experience:
Significant well-rounded mechanical/industrial experience in estimating, ideally with a proven track record in managing large-scale projects.
