Job Description

Med Lab Scientist:

This position requires MLS ASCP and SBB ASCP certifications.

The role will involve approximately 80% bench testing, along with responsibilities for staff development and growth.



Job-Specific Competencies

  • Perform all laboratory testing within the assigned section.
  • Stay up-to-date and proficient in all policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Verify and ensure quality control data aligns with the complexity of the tests.
  • Maintain competency in all test methods.
  • Oversee new staff onboarding, training, and ensure initial, 6-month, and annual competencies are completed.
  • Ensure proficiency testing is received, completed, and submitted as required.
  • Monitor and adhere to workflow and turnaround time standards.
  • Stay informed on regulatory standards related to Transfusion Medicine.
  • Maintain proficiency in computer functions for assigned tasks.
  • Complete and report testing in a timely manner.
  • Follow safety guidelines and adhere to regulatory requirements.
  • Take responsibility and accountability for all actions.


Enhancing Productivity and Laboratory Functions

  • Adapt, prioritize, and organize work to achieve maximum productivity and meet section workload demands.
  • Utilize Lean Methodology to manage Transfusion Medicine resources.
  • Oversee staff schedules, timecards, and productivity.
  • Serve as an expert resource for testing protocols in Transfusion Medicine.
  • Assist peers and supervisors with tasks after completing assigned work.
  • Follow attendance policies and begin work as scheduled.
  • Work independently and use available resources to maximize efficiency.


Staff Development and Process Improvement

  • Actively engage in training students, employees, and fellows.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist leadership with validating new equipment and tests.
  • Validate databases for new software or tests implemented in the lab.
  • Mentor students and staff, responding to concerns and promoting team cohesion.
  • Support career advancement opportunities for staff within the department.
  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to uphold institutional core values.


Customer Service

  • Handle customer service interactions with professionalism and diplomacy, addressing internal and external client needs and resolving issues.


Computer Skills

  • Maintain proficiency in lab-related computer functions.
  • Correctly acquire specimen data into computer systems.
  • Analyze and interpret patient results accurately.
  • Store patient information and results for future access as required.


Other Duties as Assigned

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field or completion of an NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology program required.
  • Master’s degree in a related science field preferred.
  • Doctorate in a related science field preferred.

Work Experience:

  • 8 years of clinical laboratory compliance and operations experience, including 3 years in blood banking and 3 years in a supervisory or lead role (with a Bachelor's degree).
  • Or 6 years of experience with a Master's degree.
  • Or 4 years of experience with a Doctorate degree.
  • Completion of LEADing Self Accelerate or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for up to two years of supervisory or management experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • MLS or BB-ASCP certification upon hire required.
  • SBB – Specialist in Blood Banking certification upon hire required.

Other Requirements:

  • Must pass pre-employment skills test as required by Human Resources.
