ABOUT US:
The Denoto Holding Corporation is a Section 17 corporation owned by the Hoopa Valley Tribe, a federally recognized Tribe located in Humboldt County, California. The Hoopa Valley Tribe’s reservation is situated along the Trinity River in the Six Rivers National Forest and is the largest reservation by land area in the State of California. The Hupa are known as trailblazers in establishing tribal sovereignty and creating one of the most well-developed self-governance operations in the nation. There are over 3,500 enrolled tribal members. We are a people deeply rooted in tradition who believe strongly in the preservation of our ancestral lands and protection of natural resources. Our word for our people is the Na:tinixwe and our homeland is Na:tinook, “the place where the trails return,” including the Denoto trail, a trail that is profoundly sacred and significant to the Hupa people.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Chief Executive Officer, under the direction of the Denoto Holding Corporation Board of Directors, will lead the day-to-day business operations of the Denoto Holding Corporation (“Corporation”), the Section 17 corporation and economic development arm of the federally recognized Hoopa Valley Tribe. The CEO is responsible for leading and managing the organization to achieve its mission, advance its strategic objectives, and uphold the values of our tribal community. The Corporation was created to enhance and diversify the Tribe’s economic development by separating the Tribe’s business activities from the political and tribal governance aspects of the Tribe that are under the direction of the Tribal Council. This position will supervise all Corporation personnel and staff, enterprises, and subsidiaries. Responsibilities include the development and implementation of strategies to create and grow the Corporation’s lines of business and revenue diversification activities, with a focus on the development of Section 8(a) certified enterprises and boosting the Tribe’ existing tribal enterprises. The Chief Executive Officer shall report directly to the Corporation’s Board of Directors and provide essential functions as outlined in the Corporation’s charter.

- Leadership and Vision : Provide visionary leadership, setting strategic goals, and promoting the long-term success and sustainability of the Corporation. Inspire and empower the team to fulfill the mission and uphold tribal values.
- Familiarity with Tribal Governance : Maintain positive working relationships with tribal leadership and governmental bodies to align the Corporation’s activities with the Tribe's priorities and cultural values.
- Operational Management : Oversee day-to-day operations, including budgeting, financial management, human resources, and administration, to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the Corporation.
- Strategic Planning : Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the Tribe's vision and goals. Continually assess the Corporation’s business activities to improve their impact and contribution to the Tribe’s economic development and diversification objectives.
- Community Engagement : Foster positive relationships with tribal members, tribal departments, and external stakeholders, ensuring open and transparent communication about the Corporation’s activities and their impact on the community.
- Compliance and Regulations : Build processes and systems for maintaining compliance with all applicable tribal, federal, and state regulations, as well as industry standards. Stay updated on relevant laws and regulations that affect the Corporation’s operations.
- Financial Stewardship : Manage the organization's finances, including developing and overseeing budgets, fundraising, and seeking opportunities for financial sustainability.
- Team Building : Build and lead a high-performing team, promoting a culture of collaboration, respect, and professional development.
- Ethical and Responsible Leadership : Uphold the highest ethical standards and ensure that the entity conducts its activities in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
- Risk Management : Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, protecting the organization's assets and reputation.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree preferred with specialization in business, economics, finance, community development or a related field. Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or Economics are encouraged to apply, but is not a requirement for the position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with the successful development of Section 8(a)-certified businesses with prior experience developing mentor-protégé, joint venture or other partnerships.
- Minimum of 5 years of proven business leadership experience, preferably in an organization focused on tribal economic development or Section 8(a) contracting.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of tribal culture, traditions, and governance.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Financial acumen, including budgeting and fiscal management.
- Exceptional leadership skills and a track record of strategic planning and execution.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to undergo a criminal background investigation. May be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Position includes occasional light lifting of up to 20 pounds. Physical factors include frequent sitting and occasional standing, walking, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, travel, typing and bending. Must be able to maintain visual attention and mental concentration for significant periods of time and able to perform assigned duties in interruptive conditions. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather. Potential hazards include constant client contact and frequent computer and equipment use.
