Registered Nurse (RN) - Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

Akron General’s Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) cares for adult patients suffering from acute myocardial infarctions, cardiogenic shock, respiratory arrest, life threatening dysrhythmias, bradyarrhymias requiring emergent insertion temporary pacemakers, congestive heart failure, cardiopulmonary arrest, post-cardiac procedure, cardiogenic shock, and severe coronary artery disease. Additionally, Akron General’s CVICU also takes post-operative coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement, and thoracic and vascular surgeries. 

 

A caregiver in this position works 7:00PM - 7:30AM.  

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide direct nursing care. 

  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a given patient population. 

  • Assessments: complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.  

  • Planning: develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinating the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.  

  • Implementation: provide nursing care, administer treatments and medication, and document.  

  • Evaluation: participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process. 

  • Leadership/professional development: delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.  

  • Department specific duties: review and document progress and discharge goals with patients and families, participate in and document patient care, discharge planning and case management conferences, communicate information regarding patient plan of care, current outcomes and acuity at shift report, communicate changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues, ensure JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved, incorporate patient safety goals and complete all paper and electronic records. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.  

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). 

  • Willing to obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and TNCC certification and complete CVVHD training within one year of employment.  

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
