Part-Time / Seasonal / Temporary Position Camp FUNshine is held Monday - Friday The Bus Driver Position is a seasonal position where the number of days per week and hours may vary, depending on the camp's weekly schedule. POSITION SUMMARY Under general supervision, this position is responsible for driving an activity bus to provide safe, efficient, and on-time transportation of summer camp participants and staff to and from specified designations while obeying all traffic laws about road and highway safety. This is a non-exempt seasonal, temporary position for the period of June 16th - August 8th with no benefits.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.)
- Drives activity bus to transport participants to and from specified destinations for tours and events in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes, and transportation operation guidelines.
- Ensures participant safety while on the activity bus and throughout the trip; parks where loading and unloading are safe and easy.
- Obeys all traffic laws, and observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses, including clearing the activity bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency.
- Evaluates boarding ease to assure passenger safety, provides a ground step, and assists passengers entering and exiting the vehicle.
- Keeps the activity bus clean and free of any items that may present a safety problem.
- Maintains a safe operating vehicle by performing pre- and post-inspection activities, including but not limited to checking for adequate fuel, oil, water, and air levels, and mechanical defects.
- Secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route, including ensuring all participants have exited the vehicle, parking the vehicle properly, making a visual inspection of the bus interior/exterior to check for damage, inspecting all seats and isles for trash, participant belongings, and loose bus parts (armrests), and securing all windows and doors to protect the interior of the vehicle.
- Coordinates with direct supervisor on washing the vehicle.
- Transports only authorized participants.
- Accurately maintains records, as required by law and Town policy; reports all incidents and accidents and participates in/meets all post-accident drug testing requirements as required by Town policy.
- Requires prompt, regular attendance in-person and must be available to work on-site, in-person during scheduled hours and as directed.

- Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and safety practices and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations as it relates to the position.
- Thorough knowledge of commercial vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Thorough knowledge of first aid, health standards, and hazards including the ability to administer first aid.
- General understanding of pre- and post-trip procedures.
- General knowledge of cleaning procedures and practices
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow printed and electronic maps, route descriptions, and directions.
- Ability to operate vehicles, fire extinguishers, two-way radios, and standard office equipment.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to communicate effectively sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes, and the routine operation of machines sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Ability to meet requirements and physical standards prescribed by NC DMV.
- Ability and knowledge to utilize wheelchairs, tie-downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc. (by assignment).
- Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, parents, the general public, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of sitting, climbing, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and prolonged sitting.
- Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles, and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT Must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves; Subject to hazards including working in both inside and outside environments, uneven walking/working surfaces, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards including but not limited to noise, moving mechanical parts, lifting/carrying materials, chemicals, dust, driving in various road and weather conditions, and communicable diseases. This position is subject to all State and Federal OSHA regulations, including, but not limited to the following: bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication/GHS, personal protective equipment, slips, trips, and falls, etc.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS At least one (1) year of experience transporting passengers in the operation of vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver's License, with passenger (P) endorsement.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS - Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with passenger (P) endorsement.
- Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the NC General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.
- Individuals currently approved to drive Charlotte-Mecklenburg County school buses are preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The Town of Matthews requires background checks to be conducted on the final candidate(s) applying for any position with the Town of Matthews. For this position, final candidates must pass a background process to include but are not limited to work history verification, professional/personal reference checks, pre-employment drug screening and physical, criminal background, and driving record checks. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
