SUMMARY:
Provide substation physical design and technical support to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for the projects, often working with other disciplines for solutions. This role includes both direct billable client work (project work) and project support. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline design work for projects and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating, and may participate in business development efforts at some level.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Either a graduate from a college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 2 to 4 years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5 to 10 years equivalent experience with no degree.
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to use AutoCAD for creating engineering drawing packages.
- Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings.
- Thorough understanding of substation design and industry standard design practices.
- Ability to interpret physical design for utility substations – including arrangements, elevations, fence and grading plans, grounding plans and details and equipment support structures.
- Ability to provide cross discipline coordination with other disciplines to create foundation and grading plans.
- Ability to produce complete physical substation drawing packages suitable for use by construction crews to demo/install substation projects.
- Create substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.
- Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
- Accomplish projects in an efficient manner.
- Ability to visit sites, advise on substation physical issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction.
- Experience working in a field or construction environment implementing or verifying engineering drawings.
- Ability to think both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- General knowledge of NEC and NESC.
