Job Title: Applications Engineer

Location: Austin, TX (up to 50% travel)

Salary: $75,000 - $90,000 per year

Job Type: Full-time

Description

Wilder Systems specializes in designing, manufacturing, and installing advanced automated assembly and control systems for high-precision industrial manufacturing, with a focus on the aerospace industry. Our systems are directly involved in the manufacturing of aerospace structures. We are seeking an Applications Engineer with a strong technical background, coding expertise, and problem-solving abilities to join our dynamic and innovative engineering team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on solving complex challenges and applying critical thinking to develop and implement solutions.

Responsibilities

Technology Evaluation & Customer Engagement

  • Serve as a key technical advisor, advocating for product capabilities and ensuring customer satisfaction throughout the deployment lifecycle.
  • Engage with customers, providing on-site support for product integration, system setup, troubleshooting, and training.
  • Identify sales opportunities during customer visits and work closely with the sales team to support business development.
  • Provide remote and on-site troubleshooting and technical assistance for existing and new applications.

System Design, Development & Support

  • Maintain expert-level product knowledge and application expertise.
  • Assist in the design and development of new products, focusing on both mechanical and software solutions.
  • Perform system configuration and programming of demo units for internal and customer-facing purposes.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to design, test, and validate new systems, tools, and features.

Programming & System Calibration

  • Design, develop, and optimize robotic systems for various applications, focusing on advanced motion planning, collision avoidance, and datum-based methodologies for precise task execution.
  • Write and implement custom code for system configurations, including robot motion control and error handling strategies to ensure robust system performance.
  • Apply critical thinking to develop and refine datumming methods, ensuring accurate robot positioning and coordination in complex assembly environments.
  • Design and implement metrology workflows for precise data collection and analysis, utilizing tools like Creaform and Leica (3D scanning, camera calibration, and hand probing).
  • Interfacing with PLCs to integrate robotic systems and automation tools, ensuring communication and data exchange between systems.

Testing & Data Analysis

  • Conduct system testing, acceptance testing, and validation to ensure that all systems meet customer specifications.
  • Use Python and relevant libraries (e.g., Numpy, SciPy, Matplotlib) for data analysis, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Implement and test complex mathematical models such as robot datumming
  • Analyze system performance, collect and interpret test results, and troubleshoot gaps in technical specifications.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Develop detailed, customer-focused documentation for system functionality, usage, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Produce project reports, including design reviews, acceptance test reports, and visit summaries for both internal and external stakeholders.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field, preferably Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, or Software.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and CAD-based system design.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and the ability to read mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Proficiency in Python or C++, and related coding and data analysis frameworks.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tool and shop machine use
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically and internationally for customer support, installations, and training.
  • Experience working under tight deadlines and managing customer-facing interactions.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Preferred Experience

  • Robotics or Industrial Automation background, including advanced system troubleshooting and optimization. (Fanuc, Yaskawa, UR)
  • Familiarity with PLC interfacing for advanced electro-mechanical applications
  • Experience with advanced data collection tools (Creaform, Leica) and applying metrology principles in real-world settings.
  • Experience managing vendors and suppliers, particularly in sourcing and specifying equipment such as tooling and sensors for automation systems.
  • Hands-on experience with CAM G-Code generation
