The Electrical, Instrument and Controls Designer will focus on the creation, modification, and documentation of electrical and instrumentation systems and control panel designs for industrial equipment and processes. This role is essential for producing detailed design drawings, ensuring correct component selection, and collaborating with engineers and technicians to deliver efficient and compliant electrical designs. The designer will be involved in projects from the concept stage through to construction and commissioning, supporting construction, manufacturing, automation, and control systems.
Responsibilities
- Produce detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, power routing plans (cable tray and conduit), lighting design and control panel layouts using CAD software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN)
- Select appropriate electrical components such as relays, contactors, motor starters, power supplies, and PLC hardware based on specifications
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant electrical standards and codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA)
- Create cable schedules, conduit layouts, and terminal strip drawings
- Design control panels, incorporating PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and other automation components
- Collaborate with engineers to create control system layouts and assist in the specification of control strategies
- Draft and maintain P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) and loop diagrams for control system documentation
- Assist in the development of I/O lists for PLC/DCS systems
- Work closely with project engineers and field personnel to understand project requirements and ensure that designs meet operational needs
- Support procurement teams by providing accurate bills of materials (BOM) and equipment specifications for ordering
Requirements - Degree in Electrical Design or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of experience in electrical and control system design within an industrial setting (e.g., manufacturing, oil & gas, water treatment)
- Proficient in electrical CAD software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical)
- Familiarity with PLC and HMI components and basic knowledge of programming languages (Ladder Logic)
- Understanding of industrial power distribution, motor control, and instrumentation
- Knowledge of electrical standards (e.g., NFPA, NEC, IEC) and control system integration (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in design work
- Full ownership of design tasks with ability to complete design work with minimal input from engineers
- Ability to work well in a team environment and collaborate effectively with other departments
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
