Job Description
General Summary of Duties: To provide primary health care and perform selective medical services under the direction of the clinic physician.
Supervision Received: Minimal supervision required. Reports to Administrator/CEO.
Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, also requires normal visual acuity and hearing.
Typical Working Conditions: Work in a clinical environment along with the hospital staff and administration of St. Vincent's.
Licenses, Certifications or Education Requirements: Licensure by The Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners, renewed annually. Graduation from NCCPA, Accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Skills and Abilities: Must be able to communicate effectively in a very professional and courteous manner, must have knowledge of the professional medical practice in order to give and evaluate patient care, knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care, skills in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine to provide on-going patient care. Skilled in medical history and assessment of medical conditions, along with the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Principal Duties:
  • Obtains and performs complete medical history of physical data on patients.
  • Review patient records.
  • Perform physical exam and record findings.
  • Assists supervising physician in any way appropriate that complies with the Alabama statutory rules and regulations as administered by the ASBME during surgical procedures (when applicable).
  • Administers injections, oral medications, and sutures wounds. Prepares written prescription orders for drugs and controlled substances. Writes and signs prescription for medications, physical therapy and durable medical equipment.
  • Make patient call backs.
  • Assists physicians by recording patient progress notes, issues diagnostic orders and medication orders.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Complies with hospital by-laws.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned by supervising physician.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current state licensure, hospital staff privileges, and yearly CME requirements.
  • Any function deemed necessary and appropriate by management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
