Job Summary / Purpose
The Clinical Student Extern will gain experience in a realistic professional nursing work environment by assisting in the delivery of both direct and indirect nursing care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse within the scope of practice of unlicensed, assistive personnel.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Skills and procedures
  1. Performs clinical procedures in a competent manner, following appropriate policies and procedures, under the direction of a Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
  2. Obtains vital signs, intake and output, blood sugars and documents per unit protocol.
  3. Assist in obtaining vital signs before and during blood administration.
  4. Demonstrates knowledge related to age appropriate behavior of children, adolescents, adults, and seniors to assess the growth and development of the patient.
  5. Provides routine and procedural hygiene needs.
  6. Assists in meeting patient's activity needs.
  7. Obtains specimens as directed. (IE; urine, stool, sputum).
  8. Assists/Performs post-mortem care.
  9. Assists with Joint Commission Preparedness as directed.
  10. Assists with bathing and feeding of patients.
  11. Answers patient call bells.
  12. Apply SCD's to patients.
  13. Knowledgeable regarding operation of patient care beds.
  14. Provides care for dying patients with respect, dignity and consideration by providing emotional and spiritual comfort for the patient and their family.
  15. Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment as determined by department.
Communication
  1. Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team.
  2. Maintains complete patient confidentiality.
  3. Reports changes in patient's condition or other pertinent data to RN/LPN immediately.
  4. Assists with patient and family education, as appropriate.
  5. Reports pain level findings to RN.
  6. Uses respectful and pleasant telephone etiquette when speaking to other departments about patient care needs.
  7. Utilize medical information system computer.
  8. Utilize paging system.
  9. Nursing care consistent with hospital practice guidelines.
  10. Documentation of patient information.
Quality and Safety
  1. Attends shift huddles and in-services, as appropriate.
  2. Demonstrates safe and proper use of equipment.
  3. Uses personal protective equipment and complies with all universal precautions and blood-borne pathogen regulations.
  4. Cleans and checks for malfunctioning of stretchers, wheelchairs, bedside commodes, and I.V. poles according to unit protocol.
  5. Identifies and immediately reports any actual or potential hazard observed in the hospital environment.
  6. Demonstrates knowledge of all safety and emergency codes.
  7. Uses principles of body mechanics in moving and transferring of patients.
  8. Incorporates Joint Commission patient safety goals into care.
Professional Development
  1. Dresses professionally and wears name badge at all times.
  2. Performs AIDET before any patient and family interactions.
  3. Actively participates in all Clinical Student Extern activities.

Required Education (for CHI Leadership Job Levels from Supervisor through President)

Required Education for Staff Job Levels
Currently enrolled and has completed at least one semester in an accredited School of Nursing and has completed at least one medical surgical clinical rotation.
Required Licensure and Certifications
Current BLS certification
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated career path which demonstrates progressive leadership responsibilities and project management.
Able to work collaboratively to achieve desired department, facility and regional results.
Skilled and articulate in both verbal and written communication.
Demonstrated abilities in clinical reasoning and problem solving
