Description
Full-time, benefited position working 80 hours per two week pay period in an exempt status. Days of work are Monday - Friday with hours between 7 am - 5 pm. Working weekend / night on call with provider.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
A Physician Assistant (PA) is an individual who is academically and clinically prepared to provide healthcare services under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician or surgeon. The Physician Assistant acts as an agent for the supervising physician. The orders given and the tasks performed by the Physician Assistant are considered the same as if they had been given and performed by the supervising physician. (A supervising physician or surgeon is one who: Is currently licensed to practice medicine in North Dakota; licensed by the Medical Board of North Dakota to supervise Physician Assistants; a current member in good standing with the medical staff of the hospital.)
JOB FUNCTIONS
Evaluation: Elicit a detailed and accurate history from a patient, perform an appropriate physical examination, and make an assessment and diagnosis from all available information. Initiate, review and revise treatment and therapy plans. Record and present pertinent data in a manner meaningful to the physician or surgeon. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Assess and interpret data reflective of the patient's status requirements and age specific needs, and provide appropriate care based upon the results of the assessment.
Monitoring: Assist the supervising physician or surgeon in conducting rounds, and in routine clinic follow-up of patients. Develop and implement, with the physician's assistance, patient management plans. Assist the supervising physician with the recording of progress notes in both the in-patient and out-patient settings.
Diagnostics: Order or transmit an order for x-ray, other studies, therapeutic diets, physical/occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and nursing services. Order or transmit an order for, perform or assist in the performance of laboratory procedures, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures. Initiate arrangement for admissions, complete forms and charts pertinent to the patient's medical record, and provide services to patients requiring continuing care, including patients at home.
Therapeutics: Perform routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care to include debridement of wounds and burns. Insertion of intravenous access catheters. Start, superimpose, and discontinue intravenous fluids. Under the supervision of their supervising physician or surgeon perform minor surgical procedures which are customarily performed under local anesthesia, such as removal of foreign bodies from the skin, incision and drainage of superficial skin infections and abscesses, removal of sutures and dressing changes. Manage simple and/or stable chronic conditions and assist in the management of more complex illnesses and injuries.
Documentation: Provides legible and timely documentation for care coordination and communication and is compliant with requirements for coding and reimbursement.
•Surgery: Act as first or second assist in surgery under the supervision of the supervising physician. Perform closed reductions of simple fractures and dislocations, application of casts, splints, or other orthopedic appliances, including traction. Inject/aspirate joints perform hematoma blocks and digital blocks.
•Participates and attends designated meetings, drills, and in-service programs.
•Attends mandatory programs and maintains CPR and ACLS certification per hospital policy.
•Maintains clinical experience by completing annual competency evaluations and attending educational offerings. Ensures re-certifications are kept current and appropriate to position/policies.
•Follows disaster procedures. Utilizes standard precautions and aseptic techniques. Follows guidelines for infection control and isolation. Investigates and reports incidents per risk management policy.
•Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.
•Participates in orientation of new personnel and performance evaluation of fellow peers.
•Assists in the development, revision and implementation of department policies, and procedures.
•Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
