Job Description
Performs all types of ultrasound examinations as requested by physician; schedules examinations; records and reports diagnosis; cleans, stocks and sets up ultrasound room; performs related duties. Complies with all safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the general supervision of the Administrative Director (or designee) and the medical supervision of a Perinatologist. Exercises partial supervision over students/residents/midwives.
Responsibilities
  1. Obtains Medical Center's request and establishes daily schedule; boards examinations; notifies out-patient and front office.
  2. Determines order of patient examination; gives preparation directions; transports patients to and from Ultrasound room.
  3. Obtains necessary information from patients; obtains other information from various sources. Documents patient training/education in computer systems.
  4. Prepares patients for examination of pelvis as requested by physician; explains examination to patient.
  5. Labels each image with patient information and records diagnosis on patient's images. Confirms delivery to PACS system.
  6. Reports diagnosis to physicians verbally or on chart; records any further preparation or rescheduling.
  7. Instructs physicians and students as to basic knowledge, techniques, and/or planning procedures of ultrasound.
  8. Communicates preliminary impression to referring physician in absence of Perinatologist.
  9. Cleans equipment and ultrasound room daily; stocks room with linen and materials daily; sets up unit; orders supplies.
  10. Performs more complex ultrasound examinations.
  11. Checks equipment for malfunctioning and periodically calibrates equipment; requests service when necessary.
  12. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served.

Qualifications
  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Registered in Ultrasonography by the ARDMS with OB certification or achieves within 6 months of hiring.
  • Preferred 2 years Obstetrical experience.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of hazards involved in ultrasound work and precautions necessary in handling such hazards.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, sympathetically, and effectively with patients, referring physicians, and co-workers.
  • Must obtain BLS certification upon start of position and must maintain certification per AHA guidelines.
