About the Role:

The Cytology Department Laboratory Supervisor performs specialized and technically demanding cytology examinations to determine pathological conditions. Maintains laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.


Shift: Days (8a - 4:30p)


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs specialized and technical cytology examinations according to established procedures including accurately screening GYN and non-GYN cytology samples. May assist with fine needle aspirations.
  2. Under general supervision, examines microscopically and interprets gynecologic and non-gynecologic slides for infectious, reactive/reparative and abnormal cells. Refers appropriate cases for hierarchical review. Processes and prepares specimens for examination, labels slides/specimens, records classifications on slides and alerts pathologists to abnormal cell structures for further examination.
  3. Executes a variety of laboratory tests and analyses to confirm findings.
  4. Accurately enters data and results within the laboratory information system. Maintains quality assurance records.
  5. Serves as a technical resource person and troubleshoots problems in the daily operation of equipment and specimen evaluation.
  6. Operates, calibrates, prepares and maintains equipment.
  7. Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipates needed supplies; places and expedites orders for supplies; verifies receipt of supplies.
  8. Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  9. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  10. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.


Requirements:

  • Board Certified Cytotechnologist (CT) with a minimum of 3 years’ experience (5 years’ experience preferred) or Specialist in Cytology (SCT). - Required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Laboratory Science - Required.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in related discipline. - Required.
  • Five years of experience in a diversified hospital laboratory health system and previous supervisory experience. - Strongly Preferred.
  • Completion of MT/MLS (medical laboratory science)/CLS (clinical laboratory science) internship, MT (ASCP) or equivalent. - Required.
