Job Description

Boston Metal is seeking an R&D Electrometallurgical Scientist to facilitate the development of our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) platform to revolutionize the millennia-old steel industry, while staying cost-competitive with no greenhouse-gas emissions.


In this role you will inform experiments and results from our lab and pilot-scale systems by calculating phase diagrams, chemical equilibria, and thermodynamic properties of materials and slags under different conditions. Additional responsibilities include devising new experiments based upon findings, creating new thermodynamic databases, and communicating findings to the various teams and management.


Required Experience & Skills

  • M.S. with 2+ years of work experience, OR Ph.D. in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or similar
  • Excellent knowledge of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical processes
  • Excellent knowledge of software for phase diagrams and other thermodynamic calculations (FactSage, Thermo-Calc, etc.)
  • Familiarity with chemical engineering principles (e.g., mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, transport phenomena)
  • Familiarity with electrochemistry principles (e.g., charge transfer, Current-Voltage relationships)
  • Must embrace the “start-up mindset”, thrive in small teams, self-motivated, quick learner, passionate, agile, and adaptable


Desired Experience & Skills

  • Experience in thermodynamic database development via the CALPHAD approach
  • Experience developing a MATLAB or Python based data analysis pipeline, and using graphical plotting software for data analysis and visualization
  • Experience working with large datasets
  • Experience presenting data to a range of audiences and stakeholders
  • Experience with statistical techniques such as propagation of uncertainty, statistical significance testing, design of experiments
  • Work experience in a metal production facility
  • Experimental experience with prepping of slag and metallurgical samples
  • Expertise in one or more of DSC, EIS, and SEM
  • Proven ability to design and execute experiments from planning, to running, to characterization, and presenting results


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee has potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste, extremely high temperatures, occasional exposure to moving equipment the risks of which are minimized through compliance with the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and established safety policies and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

We operate pilot plants and labs and many of our staff members are required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and you should be prepared to do so as well when necessary.
