About the Role

Ariat International is hiring a mid-level Intellectual Property Counsel to support our lean, but dynamic legal team. As the third attorney in our legal department, you will have wide-ranging responsibilities, with ownership of projects that make an immediate impact. Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Legal, your work will touch every aspect of running our global retail brand. The person in this role would be extremely organized and proactive, with a desire to learn and grow. Additionally, this person would be customer-focused and collaborate well with team members and cross-functional business partners and have experience of working directly with outside counsel. Ariat is currently following a hybrid work model, 3 days per week at our San Leandro office, and 2 days per week from home.

You’ll Make a Difference By

• Working closely with our product design teams to provide counseling and guidance in connection with the launch of new products from ideation to creation, including working with outside counsel to file trademarks and patent applications and prosecution.
• Taking lead in maintaining our patent, trademark, and copyright portfolio, conducting trademark clearances, advising on strategic areas to grow our portfolio, implementing new IP-related initiatives, identify and file copyright applications.
• Taking the lead in managing our brand enforcement efforts combating the sale of counterfeit products and working collaboratively to manage our online brand protection efforts.
• Developing and implementing new IP-related processes, policies, and training, based on legal and regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
• Advising on Intellectual Property related matters in connection with commercial and other transactions, or with active litigation.
• Manage special projects and tasks assigned and in collaboration with other team members to best support the company.
• Other duties as assigned.

About You

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school, licensed to practice law and in good standing in one or more states.
• Minimum of 4-6 years of experience with a variety of intellectual property-related legal matters, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, licensing, litigation and transactional agreements in a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
• You have experience conducting knockout clearance searches, filing trademark, copyright and/or patent applications.
• You will also have experience in one or some of these areas: marketing, advertising, intellectual property (trademark or other soft IP), privacy, or commercial counseling experience in an in-house legal department.
• Experience with global footwear and apparel brand, consumer products or manufacturing is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills and can work cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders and teams on multiple projects at once.
• Strong attention to detail—you sweat the small stuff and strive to get it right the first time, every time.
• Ability and willingness to take initiative to address problems and make continuous process improvements.
• Team player who manages well under pressure, while maintaining a good sense of humor.

The salary range for this position is $120,000 - $175,000 per year.

The salary is determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data for geographic locations. Ariat in good faith believes that this posted compensation range is accurate for this role at this location at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
