Psychiatrist (Part Time)

Senior Division

Agency and Senior Division Overview:

Feltons mission is to respond to human needs with innovative social services and treatment that combine evidence-based practices with cultural sensitivity and a deep respect for our clients. The agency was founded in 1889 and currently operates in five California counties, with administrative offices in San Francisco and Alameda Counties. The Senior Division specializes in providing a full continuum of older adult mental health outpatient programs and a range of aging services programs, including workforce development, economic security, case management, and advocacy. The Division is also very active with community partners, the development of new service areas and policy recommendations.

Our Clinic at 1500 Franklin Street is NHSC and Nurse Corps certified clinic through HRSA, meaning that licensed providers are eligible to apply for loan forgiveness opportunities through these programs.

Job Description:

This member of Feltons Senior Division Medical Support Team will provide psychiatric services across Feltons Senior Division, in Alameda and San Francisco Counties, as well as provide support to the Adult Division in San Francisco, if needed. This provider will exercise medical responsibilities for psychiatric evaluation, medication assessment, prescribing, and monitoring as an active member of the treatment team. This includes assisting with crisis interventions, 5150 evaluations, ordering diagnostic tests, and communicating medical issues with primary care providers. Responsibilities include providing clinical supervision of board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners; maintaining a client caseload and clinical records in accordance with mandated standards; preparing for conservatorship hearings, as needed; and consulting and providing on-going education to non-medical staff in psychopharmacology and in medical aspects of patient care.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Exercise medical responsibilities for psychiatric evaluation, medication assessment, prescribing, and medication monitoring.
  • Work in the field or clinic, primarily in San Francisco.
  • Provide injections and order diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team that includes psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical case managers, peer/community specialists, and other allied health professionals in the community.
  • Work in collaboration with the clinical team to provide therapy and education to clients, including but not limited to harm reduction, relapse prevention, and motivational interviewing.
  • Work in collaboration with the clinical team to make appropriate referrals and linkages to other services in support of clients.
  • Coordinate medical issues with primary care providers and specialists.
  • Provide expertise and sign off on conservatorships, as needed.
  • Maintain client caseload and provide coverage for other caseloads as needed.
  • Maintain clinical records in accordance with mandated standards.
  • Consult and provide on-going education to non-medical staff in psychopharmacology and medical aspects of patient care.
  • Other duties to support the program and Feltons medical support teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Active license from the appropriate California Board.
  • Experience and interest in working with the geriatric population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of individuals and families with behavioral health issues.
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases and psychosis. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions and preventative healthcare measures.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Complex problem solving; identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Critical thinking skills; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Social perceptiveness skills; being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Service oriented skills; actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Demonstrated interest in ongoing learning and training.
  • Ability to be a team collaborator with a welcoming, culturally-attuned philosophy of care.
  • Valid California Drivers license and car preferred.

This Part-Time Psychiatrist position may also be turned into fulltime, if desired.
