Vice President, Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Fleet Data Centers designs, builds and operates mega-scale data center campuses. Fleet is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, with satellite offices in Seattle, WA and Arlington, VA.Position Overview:The Vice President, Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs across the development organization. This role ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements while embedding a culture of safety, sustainability, and environmental responsibility across the company’s global operations. The VP of HSE collaborates with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, human resources, and legal, to ensure that HSE strategies align with the organization’s operational goals, particularly within high-risk and highly regulated sectors such as data centers, cloud infrastructure, and energy management.Key Responsibilities:Strategic Leadership & Program DevelopmentDevelop and drive the global HSE strategy aligned with corporate goals, regulatory requirements, and best practices. Create and implement comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs, policies, and procedures that ensure compliance and promote a zero-incident culture. Stay ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes, adjusting programs accordingly to maintain compliance and competitiveness. Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate HSE considerations into business planning, operations, and decision-making processes.Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal HSE regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulatory bodies. Lead the assessment of potential risks associated with new projects, initiatives, or operational changes, including in high-risk areas such as data centers or manufacturing. Establish risk mitigation strategies, including incident prevention measures and disaster recovery plans. Oversee audits, inspections, and reporting to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.Lead, mentor, and develop a global team of HSE professionals, fostering a culture of safety, transparency, and accountability. Provide regular training and development opportunities for HSE staff, ensuring they are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills. Build cross-functional partnerships with leaders in engineering, operations, and HR to foster a company-wide culture of safety and environmental stewardship.Incident Response & Crisis ManagementLead investigations and response efforts for any major safety or environmental incidents, ensuring a thorough root cause analysis is conducted and corrective actions are implemented. Establish and manage incident reporting and tracking systems, ensuring transparency and timely reporting of all health and safety incidents. Collaborate with external agencies and legal teams during investigations or enforcement actions.Sustainability & Environmental StewardshipDrive corporate sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and resource conservation. Lead efforts to develop and implement environmental management systems (EMS) that ensure sustainable operations and contribute to the company’s overall sustainability goals. Monitor and report on the organization’s environmental impact, making recommendations for improvements in sustainability practices.Data-Driven Decision MakingUtilize data and analytics to track safety performance, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement in HSE practices. Implement industry-standard performance metrics (KPIs) and benchmarking tools to measure and report on HSE performance across all business units. Regularly report HSE performance to the C-Suite and Board of Directors, highlighting key risks, trends, and opportunities for improvement.Stakeholder Engagement & AdvocacyServe as the company’s primary representative for health, safety, and environmental matters with external agencies, regulators, and industry bodies. Function as a champion for HSE internally, driving a culture of safety and environmental responsibility throughout all levels of the organization. Participate in relevant industry associations, staying connected to emerging trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in the HSE field.Lead the adoption of innovative technologies, processes, and practices to enhance HSE performance, including the use of automation, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics in safety monitoring and risk management. Collaborate with cloud, data center, and engineering teams to develop industry-specific HSE practices, particularly within data centers and high-tech environments where safety and environmental risks are significant.Required Qualifications:• Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.• Certifications: Relevant certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar.• Experience: 15+ years of progressive experience in HSE roles, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership position, preferably in a high-risk industry such as cloud services, data centers, industrial, or construction.• Expertise: Deep knowledge of global HSE regulations, including OSHA, EPA, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards. Experience in managing HSE in data centers or highly regulated technical environments is highly desirable.• Skills: Proven ability to lead and develop large, geographically dispersed teams. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills. Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.• Technology: Familiarity with HSE management software and platforms, as well as the application of advanced technologies (AI, IoT) for monitoring safety and environmental performance.• Visionary Leadership: Ability to create and execute a strategic HSE vision aligned with the company’s growth and operational goals.• Strategic Thinking: Capable of developing long-term power infrastructure plans that align with business growth and technological advancements.• Change Management: Expertise in driving cultural and operational change, particularly around safety, compliance, and sustainability.• Results-Driven: Demonstrated success in achieving measurable improvements in safety performance, compliance, and sustainability initiatives.• Integrity and Ethical Standards: Build trust, ensure fairness, and foster long-term, transparent relationships with suppliers.• Effective Communication: The ability to clearly convey expectations and requirements to suppliers and negotiation parties, while understanding their needs and concerns.
