Situations when the on-call locum OB would be called to the hospital :
When a patient presents to the hospital in Labor
When a patient requires a cesarean section
If there is a patient with prior cesarean in labor trying to have a vaginal delivery.
To round on patients who had cesarean and on Antepartum patients
If called by the Midwives (CNM), the Emergency Department or a consulting physician
Maternal transport from outside facility
Expectations of amount of time in the hospital
The average call back from the CNM or ED is variable and depends on the circumstances. The below are general averages:
consultation less than 90 minutes
D & C one hour
laparoscopy/cesarean could be up to two hours.
trail of labor on a prior cesarean, the physician would stay until they deliver.
Average time onsite would generally not exceed six hours in a shift
Call-back time does NOT include travel time to or from where they are being housed when responding to a hospital request.
