The Senior Employment Counsel, reporting directly to the Chief People Officer, will be a key legal advisor, providing expert guidance on employment law matters with a focus on employment agreements and regulatory compliance. This role will be critical in ensuring the company’s legal integrity while supporting business goals and reducing reliance on outside counsel.Approximately 60% of this position will focus on drafting, revising, and negotiating employment agreements, with particular emphasis on equity and stock-related agreements. 30% will involve providing strategic legal advice on employment matters, and 10% will focus on regulatory compliance oversight.The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in employment law, significant experience with equity / stock matters, and a hands-on, transactional mindset. This role requires a proactive, solution-driven professional capable of directly addressing legal challenges without relying heavily on external counsel.Key Responsibilities
Employment Agreements and Contracts (60%)Draft, review, and negotiate employment, separation, and severance agreements, including those involving equity and stock components.Ensure all agreements comply with applicable laws and align with the firm’s equity / stock ownership model, corporate structure, and articles of incorporation.Act as a strategic mediator for employment-related disputes, offering guidance for fair conflict resolution while mitigating company risk.Employment Legal Strategy and Advisory (30%)Serve as the primary legal counsel for all employment law matters, advising HR Business Partners (HRBPs), Finance, and Business Operations on compliance and risk management.Collaborate closely with HR leadership to create and update employee relations policies, ensuring a legally compliant, fair, and equitable workplace.Provide strategic support to business leaders on equity and compensation structures, ensuring a comprehensive understanding across key stakeholders.Design and deliver training on employment law best practices, conflict resolution, and compliance topics for management and staff.Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management (10%)Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulatory requirements, including EEOC and state agency guidelines.Develop systems to proactively monitor and mitigate legal risks related to employment matters.Manage relationships with external counsel when necessary, focusing on strategic use and minimizing external legal expenses.Skills, Knowledge and ExpertiseJuris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law in Colorado.Proven experience drafting, negotiating, and managing employment agreements, including equity and stock-related agreements.Expertise in employment law, including EEOC compliance, state regulatory agency matters, and conflict resolution strategies.Experience advising on compensation, equity, and long-term incentive plans.Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.Ability to collaborate across departments and influence key stakeholders effectively.Experience working with HRIS systems and employee engagement tools (preferred).Prior in-house legal counsel experience or experience in a fast-paced corporate setting (preferred).About Trilon
