About the College/Unit/Department

The Music Theory and Composition Area ( at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music is a vibrant creative community that fosters a supportive environment for composers and performers to explore a wide range of musical interests and styles in music, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations outside of music. Composition students also frequently collaborate with student and local filmmakers. The Dancz Center of New Music is the home of the Music Composition area and features a modular black box theater and three electronic music studios that form a robust space for the creation, performance, recording, and dissemination of 21st century music and multimedia artworks. In particular, Electronic Music Studio 1 (Media Studio) is optimized for media scoring and is outfitted with a collection of sample libraries including Vienna Symphonic Library, BBC Symphony Orchestra Pro, and other various Spitfire libraries.
The Hugh Hodgson School of Music ( is among the leading schools of music in the region and nationally. It includes comprehensive programs, with degrees at the undergraduate level through the master's and doctorate.
