Summary:
Under the supervision of a Registered Physician performs a number of medical procedures including pre intra and post-operative management of patients assistance with surgical procedures wound care and others. Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders for patient care. This Physicians Assistant position is the same as Physician Assistant I (R09035) but may perform duties in the cardiology area.
Responsibilities:
Utilizes professional training in order to perform a number of medical procedures. All work is performed under the supervision of a physician but requires judgements and interpretations to complete. The following are the procedures that Physicians Assistants are authorized to perform in Rhode Island Hospital:
- Taking histories and administering physicals
- Assisting in surgical procedures
- Assisting in pre intra and post-operative management of patients
- Performing thoracentesis
- Perfuming tube thoracostomies
- Starting IVs
- Venous and arterial cut downs; subclavian veni-punctures
- Placing a CVP Sawn-Ganz catheters and arterial lines
- Drawing blood (arterial and venous)
- Wound care and management
- Dictating discharge summaries
- Ordering appropriate respiratory therapy
- Airway management
Requests social service physical therapy radiological medical/surgical consultations on behalf of and in the name of an attending doctor in the division and/or his/her resident in an individual case.
Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders to include:
- Standing orders on pre-op and post-op patients.
- Antimicrobal and antiarrhythmic drugs
- Cardiotonics-cathecholamines and cardiac glycosides.
- Anticoagulants and/or protamine sulfate
- Vitamins; intravenous fluids
- Diet and/or tube feedings
- Sedatives and analgesics
- Hypnotics; antimetics; antispasmodics
- Radiological and laboratory studies Cathartics
Presents pertinent patient data at physicians conferences and consultations where the Physicians Assistant is reviewed and advised in the area of patient care.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelors Degree in Biology and two years of graduate study in an AMA approved Physicians Assistant program.
Current registration as Physicians Assistant in the State of Rhode Island.
An extremely high level of analytical ability in order to apply post-surgical training to the treatment of patients.
Good interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with patients and nursing personnel.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
Three months on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with job responsibilities and work routines.
Exposed to surgical procedures and patient care environments.
Regularly experiences mental/visual fatigue from job pressures.
