Handles a high volume of criminal cases collaboratively with a team, preparing cases and gathering data needed for various hearings including drafting legal documents, pleadings and discoveries and performing data entry. Collaborates with law enforcement agencies to ensure that all necessary materials are obtained and individuals are contacted to assist attorneys. Responds to the general public and law enforcement inquiries. This position works under general supervision. Essential Functions + Performs some duties of lower-level related positions, may provide assistance and training to others, and performs more complex, skilled tasks. + Creates new criminal case files. Processes, checks and assigns tasks to staff and handling attorneys. Processes incoming criminal legal documents, forms and records and requests additional reports, witness statements and follow-up investigations as necessary. Reviews police reports, citations and documents for accuracy. Drafts or prepares a variety of legal documents for attorney review and signature and files documents. + Organizes court documents electronically for assigned attorneys prior to appearing in court. Researches and obtains necessary information. Constructs discovery packets and responds to discovery deadlines. Tracks a significant volume of criminal cases from the filing process through the criminal adjudication process. + Monitors and tracks the status of defendants' probation for compliance and follows up as needed. Provides research and other technical assistance to attorneys and others. Consults with other agencies and departments for proper document handling and routing. + Organizes attorney court schedules in order to ensure proper coverage of caseloads. Responds to information requests and provides legal information about court processes, court rules, court records and forms. Provides clerical support by handling phone calls and e-mails and sending out letters and documents. + Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training Associate's degree in paralegal studies, criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or related field and two years of progressively responsible experience in public administration, a professional law office, or public safety agency performing advanced administrative support duties, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Knowledge of: + standard office practices, methods and equipment + computer usage including related software + the criminal justice system, legal terms, processes and practices. Ability to: + type a minimum of 50 wpm + interpret legal documents, governing regulations, policies and procedures under the supervision of an attorney + prepare detailed reports and analyze for conformity + research, analyze and interpret statistical data to draw conclusions, correct problems and recommend solutions + maintain a high level of confidentiality + remain calm in stressful situations + deal courteously, professionally and firmly with individuals who may be emotional in order to convey critical information + manage high-volume caseload responsibilities with continuous interruptions and occasionally conflicting priorities + work independently and in a team environment + use appropriate discretion and judgment, occasionally with minimal direct supervision + manage time effectively, multi-task, and organize and prioritize tasks with detailed accuracy + communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance + and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
