Job Description

Tesla's Energy Policy team supports the company's objectives by engaging key stakeholders on a broad range of policy platforms, including legislative, municipal, business development and regulatory matters to support solar energy, energy storage, energy manufacturing, and deployment. The Managing Energy Policy Advisor will be responsible for California state energy policy in support of Tesla's grid-scale battery energy storage and residential energy products. The Managing Policy Advisor will work on policies related to integrated resource planning, ratemaking, interconnection, permitting, codes and standards, utility-level programs, and electricity markets.
Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advocate of state and utility regulatory policies impacting all aspects of Tesla's California energy business, including by providing oral and written testimony
  • Work with and before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), California Energy Commission (CEC) and California Independent System Operator (CAISO)
  • Engage with California state officials - regulators, regulatory staff, legislators, constitutional officers, and other public officials - to accomplish Tesla's policy objectives
  • Work with trade associations, allies, and stakeholders to build consensus on policies, including developing advocacy campaigns, public relations or communications strategies
  • Be responsive to needs of Tesla leadership and internal business units. Assist internal business units in problem-solving issues related to market growth and entry, as needed
Requirements
  • Degree in a field relevant to Energy, Political Science, Economics, and Utility Business Models or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years' relevant work experience in the electricity or energy industry and 2+ California regulatory affairs experience
  • Demonstrated history of managing policy initiatives or campaigns and excellent relationships with California state policymakers and their staff
  • Superb judgment and emotional intelligence with ability to resolve contentious issues, and forge consensus and build coalitions among divergent views
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills
  • Independent, self-directed team player who is enjoys working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Impeccable communication and presentation skills, both writing and speaking - ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of individuals

    • Expected Compensation
      $88,000 - $204,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
