Job Summary The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg campus, invites applicants for a full- time (9 months), tenure track Assistant Professor position in Cellular and Molecular Biology within the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences. Potential start would be August 2025. A successful applicant would contribute to the scholarship and teaching mission of the school. They would develop an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program. Applications from exceptional candidates will be considered in all areas of molecular, cellular, systems biology, cancer biology, immunology, vector biology, and infectious disease. Preference will be given to individuals who show potential to integrate with existing institutional research strengths. The School of Biological Environmental and Earth sciences houses faculty with diverse expertise that serves the most rapidly growing cohort of undergraduates at the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently, the school serves over 700 majors and 60 graduate students. The unit of Cellular and Molecular Biology is comprised of collaborative, research active faculty ( The unit possesses cutting edge infrastructure such as super resolution microscopy, biosafety level 3 laboratories, and small animal facilities. New faculty will be supported by a generous start up package and laboratory space, will serve as primary advisor to Doctoral and Master's students, contribute to graduate team taught courses, and other professional development activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities - Develop a robust, extramurally funded research program in an area of molecular and cellular biology.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in line with area of expertise.
- Mentor graduate students to further their professional development.
- Contribute to the service mission of the University, college, and school by participating in school, college, and university service activities.
- Advise students in the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences.
- Perform outreach to raise profile of institutional programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications are a PhD in molecular and cellular biology or related field and related postdoctoral training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to produce high quality scientific documents in the form of manuscripts and grant proposal. Operation of instrumentation required to conduct research in their area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include, but are not limited to, evidence of exceptional scientific accomplishments such as publication of high impact research in internationally recognized journals. Successful grant applications or other evidence of ability to secure extramural funds. Prior experience teaching at the collegiate level.
