HOSPITAL TEACHER
Middle/High School Teacher
(Focus Area: Math and Science)
Primary Responsibilities
Instruction

  • Meets with parents and students about the Hospital Education Program
  • Enrolls students in the school upon request/permission from the parent/guardian
  • Provides a daily instructional program to students enrolled in the Hospital Education Program
  • Establishes contact with the home school to determine the student's current educational status and to outline an appropriate instructional program during admission
  • Maintains an organized file of each student in the program's reporting database
  • Assesses the student's educational strengths and weaknesses and determines their relationship to medical priorities
  • Assigns and reports grades to the home school, when appropriate
  • Makes educational recommendations to the home school upon the student's discharge
  • Assists the student in maintaining assignments from the home school
  • Develops lesson plans and individualized instructional plans based on each student's needs and curriculum guidelines
  • Refers children with suspected disabilities to the HEP's School Based team
  • Administers educational/developmental evaluation for students referred by the School Based team for formal assessment
  • Participates in interdisciplinary staffing/patient meetings to assist in the total care of the child
  • Provides medical staff with pertinent educational information
  • Expedites the procedure for homebound instruction
  • Sends periodic progress reports to the parents and home school for an intermediate- or long-term patient
  • Completes reports and forms required at the time of discharge on a timely basis
Special Education
  • Serves on the HEP's School Based team, Eligibility team, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, as appropriate.Secure current IEP from home school
  • Addend IEP to reflect current placement in the hospital
  • Comply with all timelines regarding the IEP, including re-evaluations and eligibilities
  • Develops, in coordination with the IEP team, an IEP for each child found eligible for special education and related services and with parental permission, implements the plan
  • Upon discharge, communicate any changes to the IEP to the home school
Support
  • Consults routinely with the Education Director
  • Participates in faculty meetings, teacher meetings, and any other meeting deemed necessary by the Education Director
  • Assists in developing objectives of the hospital teaching program
  • Participates in in-service programs for the faculty, school division special education teachers, and hospital staff, when appropriate
  • Interprets instructional program to hospital staff, parents, public school division personnel, and others
  • Provides in-service/staff development to appropriate groups upon request, with the approval of the Education Director
  • Participates in external activities, organizations, and educational programs to further personal professional growth
  • Assumes other assigned responsibilities as necessary for effective educational programming and overall program goals

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; apply pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; planning and managing activities; preparing and maintain accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information; compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; specific knowledge to satisfactorily apply appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws, age appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, community resources and stages of child development; ability to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; use job-related equipment; knowledge of and ability to apply best instructional practices in lessons; flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; operate equipment using standardized methods; ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; independent interpretation of guidelines; problem solving with equipment; ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting tact and patience.
Education and/or Experience:
Candidates must have earned a Master's Degree in Education with a valid teacher's certificate with an endorsement in a major area of special education. A minimum of two years of successful public school teaching or comparable experience is required. Preference for math/science areas.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:
Many of the teaching sessions are at bedside, which may require additional standing, bending and/or kneeling.
The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Conducted by the Education Director according to procedures established by the Charlottesville City School system.
