Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Department Chair, the Assistant/Associate Professor of Mathematics will cultivate a course of professional growth as a teacher and scholar while performing service to the department, college, university, and community. They will engage in scholarship activities, with priority for those which engage and enhance the academic and professional development of students.
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Mathematics teaches 24 semester credits per year, including lower and upper division courses in primarily an in-person modality. They contribute to the mission of the university and its student-centered approach, conduct research in mathematics and have a publication record, and provides university service through evaluation and revision of curriculum and development of other courses compatible with program vision.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics or closely related field from an accredited university
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in college-level math courses
  • Research experience and the demonstrated ability to engage in scholarly activities
  • Desire and ability to mentor undergraduate students
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching university students in a diverse environment
  • Experience developing curriculum
  • Ability to contribute to extramural funding proposals
  • Strong background in applied mathematics
  • Background and interest in probability and statistics
  • Ability to lead Applied Math Concentration
Other Qualifications:
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position.
  • Able to teach Probability or Statistics.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.
  • Able to teach classes in multiple modalities, including in-person and online
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
1. Models best professional practices in teaching (70%)
  • Develops a syllabus of course activities and assessments of learning that meet the requirements of the course description and established institutional, state, and professional standards.
  • Plans and delivers individual class sessions that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
  • Maintains records on student participation and performance and assigns course grades in a timely manner.
  • Integrates in-depth knowledge of content area, teaching, and learning into instructional practice.
  • Demonstrates the proficiencies outlined in professional, state, and institutional standards.
  • Values candidates' learning and adjusts instruction appropriately to enhance candidate learning.
  • Understands assessment technology, uses multiple forms of assessments in determining effectives, and uses the data to improve practice.
  • Be available at least one hour per week for each course taught to advise students regarding their course work.

2. Scholarship and Professional Development (10%)
  • Conduct research projects in mathematics involving students
  • Disseminate research through peer-reviewed publication in mathematics journals, conference presentation, or Invited talks.

3. University Service (15%)
  • Attend orientation programs and Faculty Assembly meetings and participate in academic duties, including academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Participate in committees; course, program and curriculum area coordination; curricular development and textbook selection; instructional workshops and activities within own curricular areas, policy and program review; or other learning assessments.
  • Serve as representatives on school or college level and university level committees of the Faculty Assembly, as well as on other task forces and committees that assist the chair of the Faculty Assembly and/or the deans in the formation of academic policies and related matters.
  • Assist withco-curricular activities to include organization of, participation in, or presentation of faculty forums or workshops; advising and sponsorship of clubs and societies; participation in, organization of, providing guidance and assistance to extra-curricular or co-curricular university events such as banquets, the literary magazine, the athletic program, intercultural events, theatrical productions, guest speaker forums, or graduation ceremonies.
  • Participate in recruiting and retention activities
  • Meet department and college specific expectations for university service.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
