Posting Text Black Hills State University (BHSU) and the School of Behavioral Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Sociology with an anticipated start date of August 2025.
BHSU is located in the beautiful northern Black Hills, one and a half hours from Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and two hours north of Pine Ridge Reservation, one of nine Indigenous reservations located in the state. The School of Behavioral Sciences consists of programs in Sociology, Human Services, Psychology, Exercise Science, and Outdoor Education and offers a wide variety of opportunities for collaboration between different fields and with the community.
DUTIES: We seek a scholar with a strong commitment to quality teaching and mentorship. Teaching duties include four courses per academic semester (4/4 load) at the introductory and advanced undergraduate levels in a combination of face-to-face and online courses. The successful candidate will also maintain an active research agenda, mentor students, and provide service to the department, university, and community.
QUALIFICATIONS: - We seek candidates with a strong sociology background, including a Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or a closely related field.
- Doctoral candidates who are ABD and near graduation will be considered.
- Degree completion must occur no later than one year after the initial start date of the contract. The initial contract will be a term contract at the Instructor level, $4000 lower than the terminal degree compensation. The following years contract will include $4,000 salary increase and assistant professor rank reflecting degree completion. Upon request, one year prior service may be applied toward promotion and tenure, with BHSU and BOR approval.
- The area of specialization is open, with preference given to candidates who can support the strengths of the department in the specialty tracks of law and justice and culture and society ( ). Some teaching experience is preferred, and a successful candidate should be able to instruct a range of undergraduate courses in the sociology curriculum including research methods, undergraduate statistics, social stratification, and sociological theory.
