Instrument & Controls Engineer

Orbital is seeking an Instrument & Controls Engineer to provide technical support and oversight for instrumentation projects in our Houston, TX Office. The position requires demonstrated engineering and design competency, preferably in an engineering services environment, and with heavy industrial engineering projects. This is a full-time, hybrid position. This position will include a mix of remote and on-site work. Candidates must be local to the Greater Houston Region and able to visit local client sites when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Review client requests for proposals and scopes of work. Act as Orbital representative at bid walkdowns. Prepare manhour estimates and proposals.
  • Lead instrumentation project engineering and develop contractor construction packages including single line diagrams, equipment plans, cable/conduit routing plans, interconnecting wiring diagrams, loop diagrams and scopes of work. For larger projects, coordinate with other engineers and designers as required to execute the scope. Review calculations and deliverables for completeness and accuracy prior to issuance to client.
  • Support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource.
  • Drive internal and external quality and design review meetings throughout the course of the project.
  • Develop, maintain and upgrade technical standards/specifications to be used on specific projects.
  • Complete all tasks in accordance with design and project execution procedures and guidelines as set forth in corporate Quality Management System.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and application of standards (ISA) that apply to instrumentation and controls.
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the NFPA 70, Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Proficient in reading, understanding and revising engineering drawings including P&ID’s and PFD’s.
  • Ability to produce specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, and actuated valves.
  • Experience and knowledge to specify equipment required for control systems (PLC’s/DCS’s) and attend FAT/SAT for those equipment.
  • Ability to perform calculations for actuated valves selection and sizing, Thermowell Wake frequency and Flow elements using appropriate software.
  • Ability to produce Cabinet Fabrication Drawings, Instrument Loop Diagrams, Logic diagrams, Instrument Installation Details, etc.
  • Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all Instrumentation deliverables.
  • Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules and man-hour estimates for small and medium size projects.
  • Ability to calculate tray and conduit fill and ability to route conduit and cable tray.
  • Availability for on-site assistance during startup and commissioning.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Systems or Industrial Engineering from an accredited university is required.
  • 10+ years of professional experience.
  • Exposure to the Metals, Midstream Oil & Gas, Refineries & Petrochemical and/or Utilities & Power industries.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge and application of company department design and drafting standards.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
  • Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation (INTOOLS) or similar software.
  • Interest in keeping updated knowledge in instrumentation and technology.
