Job Title: Data Science Manager
Position Purpose:
The Data Science Manager is responsible for leading a team of data scientists, ensuring their efforts drive business profitability, increased efficiencies, and improved customer experience. This role involves leading overall programs, maximizing resources, partnering with project teams and business partners, and supporting problem-solving efforts. The Data Science Manager provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to team members, supporting their development of business and technical skills. The team works on forecasting possible outcomes of price and promotion actions at different levels, including AI solutions, and requires proficiency in deep learning and forecasting techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
- People Management & Team Leadership (40%) : Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to Data Scientists. Evaluate performance, execution, and contribution. Attract, retain, and develop top talent to build an effective and high-performing team. Support team in developing business knowledge and technical skills. Ensure appropriate processes and job-specific requirements are documented. Develop onboarding and training plans for technical and soft skills. Manage resources effectively to align with strategic initiatives and business needs. Foster collaboration within the team. Support the design and development of algorithms and models to create business insights. Drive team results and celebrate accomplishments.
- Project Management (25%) : Prioritize and assign projects, balancing factors like funding, ROI, and innovative work. Manage programs to ensure consistency of execution, resource balance, and quality solutions. Collaborate with program managers and business partners to align on objectives and expectations. Serve as an escalation point for project issues. Provide executive updates on program effectiveness, team accomplishments, findings, and recommended solutions.
- Strategy & Business Development (15%) : Leverage business knowledge and relationships to seek new business opportunities for data science. Develop trust and collaboration with internal customers and cross-functional teams. Ensure alignment with IT support models, tools, and governance. Collaborate with other data science managers to establish high-level strategy and optimize talent management.
- Technical Exploration & Development (20%) : Stay updated on key developments in data science, technical skills, and data sources. Participate in continuous improvement of data science and analytics by developing replicable solutions. Ensure best practices and vision for data analysis and model are leveraged.
Direct Manager/Direct Reports:
- Reports to Senior Manager or above
- Manages three direct reports (two remote, one returning in June)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience taking a deep learning solution from end to end.
- Previous people or project team management experience.
- 9+ years of experience in business intelligence and analytics.
- Expertise in predictive modeling, data mining, and data analysis.
- Proficiency in running queries against data (preferably with Google BigQuery or SQL).
- Proficiency with data visualization software (preferably Tableau).
- Proficiency in prescriptive modeling like optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search, or NLP.
- Experience managing and growing team members in a professional setting.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
Minimum Years of Work Experience:
- 8 years (can tolerate less if the candidate has a PhD or a math-heavy field with 4-5 years of experience).
Compensation:
$_170,000_to $_180,000_ per year annual salary.
Bonus: Additional 10% influenced by performance, payable twice a year.
