POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Qcells C&I Solar + Storage team is looking for a Senior Project Engineer to work on community solar and small utility scale projects (2MW to 50MW). This role will work with our energy analysts, consulting engineers, EPC partners, and others to develop initial designs and perform due diligence for early-stage PV and BESS projects that are either self-developed or acquired from 3rd parties. The Sr. PE will perform project due diligence, produce preliminary designs, create and update production models, and manage consulting engineers and EPC engineers to complete the full designs for our turnkey projects. This role will have experience in project-level technical due diligence, project development engineering, production estimate, indicative estimate development, consulting and EPC engineering oversight, construction support, project risk analysis, and more. This role will bring projects from initial designs to NTP, and then through the construction and close-out phases. The Sr. Project Engineer will also support the Development and Project Finance teams during the closing processes, pre-NTP and post-PTO.
This position will be remote, reporting to the Director of Engineering & Delivery who works out of our San Francisco office. The position requires some flexibility to travel as necessary to visit project sites for opportunities and site assessments, likely less than 5%. If the candidate desires to work from an office, that office would be the Teaneck NJ, San Francisco, or Irvine California office.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working with the Origination/Development team to provide engineering deliverables for key development items, which may include preparing preliminary layouts, technology selection, site studies, feasibility studies, preparing interconnection applications, and project cost estimation.
- Deliver land and technical due diligence in support of the Origination/Development team for opportunities at various stages of development both before and after project award.
- Prepare conceptual layouts and electrical single-line diagrams for those opportunities.
- Deliver technical leadership in support of the Project Finance team for stakeholders' interests including investors, site owners, utilities, off-takers, and EPC partners.
- Visit project sites to assess and collect key project technical information, such as site structures, electrical drawings, site electricity load data, and costs.
- Manage and expand consulting engineer partners.
- Produce, or review those that are created by others, in-house indicative project cost estimates.
- Review and edit system energy modeling and energy estimates, initially produced by Project Analysts, using tools such as PVsyst, Helioscope to ensure production targets are reasonable for both near-term and long-term goals.
- Review and update system engineering throughout the project development process to achieve maximum financial outcome.
- Carry out technology reviews for PV or ESS equipment and work with manufacturers for acceptability for use in long-term operating assets.
- Source and manage external consultants.
- Ability to manage other engineers and analysts if called upon to do so.
- Perform other duties and special projects, as assigned by the Sr. Director of Engineering & Delivery.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in PV solar for ground mount projects over 1 MW in size.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience on BESS project engineering at the commercial scale, over 200kW.
- Extensive work experience in management and completion of ground-mount projects in both distributed generation and small utility scale projects, both fixed and single axis tracker.
- Preferably, some experience with roof and carport projects.
- Comfortable and accustomed to working with various project stakeholders, including investors, EPC partners, developers, consultants, and O&M contractors.
- Advanced proficiency in engineering software and energy modeling applications, such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, Geli, and Microsoft Office tools.
- Experience managing other team members, including project analysis and project cost analysis.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Energy engineering science.
- Capability to review engineering and technical matters with a commercial perspective.
- Experience in permitting processes with local authorities.
- Experience with FTM utility interconnection.

- Able to cope with dynamic surroundings and be team-oriented with a sense of humor.
- Able to develop written/verbal work deliverables that are organized and appropriate to the respective audience.
