Position Summary

We are looking for a full-time Database Engineer located in San Diego, CA to lead the development and management of Shein’s databases and distributed systems. This role centers on MySQL and other database technologies. You will work in large-scale, mission-critical environments with zero tolerance for downtime, responsible for designing high-availability solutions. The Shein Database Reliability Engineering team comprises DBAs and Systems Engineers committed to delivering highly available data services globally. Our team focuses on building a reliable, high-performance, and secure database infrastructure through automation. As this is an operational role, availability for urgent matters, including incident response during evenings and holidays, is required. Compensated time off will be provided on the next business day for any off-hours work.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintaining scalable, reliable, and robust production database environments (MySQL in Clouds like AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Monitoring for problems and diagnosing and addressing those problems as needed.
  • Performance tuning, query optimization, and index tuning.
  • Building database tools and scripts to simplify, automate, to reduce operation toil.
  • Responsible for working with development teams and engineers to provide database design guidance.
  • Handle Database upgrades and migrations, while monitoring and improving database performance.
  • Triage and solve database issues, drive incidents until resolution and employ measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Do capacity planning benchmarking on various databases.
  • Provide assessments of data integrity, high availability, data security, and privacy.
  • Provide 24x7 escalated on-call support on a pager rotation.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent technical discipline.
  • MySQL specific database experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience managing MySQL clusters at scale in production.
  • Production experience with Azure, AWS, GCP, or any other cloud provider.
  • Experience using AWS/GCP or any other cloud provider.
  • A solid understanding of distributed/replicated database topologies.
  • Experience working in AWS (EC2 / EBS / S3 Snapshots / Aurora / RDS).
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, combined with a sense of ownership and drive.
  • Track record monitoring and analyzing system performance, isolating issues or bottlenecks that could impact reliability, performance and scalability.
  • Deep understanding of Linux system, ability to deploy open-source software independently.
  • Proficient in more than one scripting language (shell/perl/python, etc.)
  • A strong desire to be challenged by problems of scale and complexity to make our service better for our customers.
  • The ability to remain calm in the face of extreme crises.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work effectively with geographically remote teams.

Nice to have

  • 2+ years of experience managing MySQL / Percona Server 5.7 / 8, Aurora at scale
  • Experience with Atlassian tools, such as Confluence and Jira
