General Summary

The Product Development Engineer is a highly motivated and innovative contributor who thrives working on cross-functional teams, contributing to the mechanical and physical design direction for new and existing products and the processes and procedures to manufacture them. The Product Development Engineer is responsible for Invention, Design, Engineering, Sustaining, and Technical Support of assigned products and projects.


They are responsible for progress toward Engineering performance objectives and continuously seeking ways to improve products, services, and processes to increase value for customers. They will be expected to have knowledge and full understanding of the complete Nuvara portfolio of products as well as the market segments that these products are used in. They are responsible for maximizing value and customer success by aligning complex product solutions with key market needs.


They will participate on a cross-functional team with an emphasis on mechanical engineering to design and develop healthcare technology solutions that have software to control electronics, monitor user access to secure carts and cabinets, maintain medication and medical supply inventory, and communicate information to external applications and networks. This position requires creativity to develop simple, clean, intuitive, reliable products for a positive overall product user experience. This role will be expected to also provide Technical Customer Support for assigned products plus Sales and Marketing support, integration, installation, training, and service.


They will work closely with other Nuvara team members, consultants, and internal support resources. They must be able to continuously contribute to complex Engineering projects that also depend on input from multiple disciplines, including Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering. This role requires an independent yet highly collaborative person who is accountable for results and enjoys a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

 

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for mechanical engineering design creation and modification by compiling data related to designs, specifications, procedures and materials which are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts. May work under the supervision or oversight of a Senior Engineer or Manufacturing team member to accomplish responsibilities depending on complexity and scope of assigned task.
  • Create and document designs, assemblies, components, etc. for use in fabrication, manufacturing, and product assembly.
  • Conduct analysis to optimize designs for manufacturing, shipping, installation, and end-user experience.
  • Contributes to inventing, designing, maintaining, & innovating high quality components and/or products that meet or exceed market expected value.
  • Serve as a project team member for new product development from concept development to commercialization and/or on-market product improvements.
  • May lead projects including, but not limited to; product design, process improvements, product improvements or issue resolution or low to moderately complex assignments.
  • Reviews and receives feedback on proposed designs and/or deliverables with other departments, as required (Sales, Engineering, Production, Sheet Metal, Service, Quality).
  • Contributes to vendor selection and arranges for prototype parts, fabrication and assembly.
  • Tests prototypes against specifications and report results.
  • Work closely with other departments and customers as a technical consultant to provide a range of solutions and identify opportunities.

  • Responsible for product revisions while being sensitive to distributed applications and the impact of newer versions to deployed systems currently in-use by customers.
  • Prepare documentation, including but not limited to: business requirements documents (e.g., product specifications), production documentation (e.g., assembly methods, drawings, test procedures, etc.) application workflows, user manuals, and maintain product knowledge base.
  • Contribute to system design reviews and product innovation sessions.
  • Communicates clearly between staff and clients to obtain system requirements and environmental impacts on design.
  • Effectively uses judgment and initiative to clarify and resolve gaps in system design specifications.
  • Resourceful in identifying, clarifying, and removing obstacles.
  • Comply with Engineering policies and procedures.
  • Commit to learning, gaining feedback, and effectively adjusting quickly based on new facts as they present themselves.
  • Contributes to the product’s security, scalability, portability, stability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Able to perform cost analysis of projects, changes in design, and equipment acquisition.

Specific Knowledge and Job Skills

Requirements:

  • High level of computer literacy (PC), including the ability to use SOLIDWORKS, MS Office 365 applications, Jira, manufacturing database and ERP programs.
  • Theoretical and practical experience with SOLIDWORKS 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
  • Ability to influence and recommend design proposals to senior engineers and management.
  • Team oriented, proactive, and adaptable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Strong preparation, organizational and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated and driven, demonstrable positive attitude.

Additional Considerations:

  • Knowledge of accepted drafting practices including, ANSI/ISO Y14.5, DOD-100/1000, and other recognized publications covering electro-mechanical design documentation.
  • Experience working on a product development team and supporting hardware products for the healthcare market.
  • Experience operating in accordance with Lean product and process development, agile project management.
  • Able to quickly discover & implement the simplest and most direct solutions to challenging problems.
  • Experience with precision sheet metal design, fabrication, and finishing.

 

Minimum Requirements  

  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering – or – other Engineering Degree with proven experience designing electromechanical devices using SOLIDWORKS.
  • 3+ years of documented success developing, maintaining, revising, and supporting hardware products.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and Office 365 applications. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver’s license.
