While the H-1B Visa enables immigrants and foreign workers from other countries to secure employment under specialty occupation, an Employment Authentication Document or EAD Visa is another type of work permit that proves a candidate’s right to work in the U.S. This is a popular work permit for non-immigrant individuals who are in the U.S using the F-1 or M-1 visa.

What is EAD Visa

Under these non-immigrant visas (mainly meant for education), the candidates can only stay in the U.S but cannot work under the USCIS guidelines. The need for an EAD visa is also there when you have a pending Form I-485 or a pending application for a residential permit.In case you are a lawful resident of the U.S, you wouldn’t need an EAD because your Green card status would be enough proof for the same. An EAD visa is also not required if you are already working in the United States under the other work permits like H-1B Visa, P-visa, L-1B visa, etc.

L-2 visa holders and dependent candidates on the L-1 visa holders can also apply for the EAD visa permit to work in the United States. With the constantly changing rules and regulations, there are now ongoing debates about the eligibility of H-4 Visa holders to apply for the EAD visa.

Successful acquiring of the green card enables the candidate to later apply for citizenship in the U.S after a period of three to five years. There are multiple types of green cards available, much like how different types of visas are available.

The EAD visa permit lasts for one year, following which the candidate has to renew their permit to lawfully stay in the United States and earn while living there

Having an EAD visa card with you is extremely important if you want to reside in the United States lawfully and work there. In case you lose your documentation, you won’t be allowed to work in the U.S anymore

Family-based Green Card

Under this, close and immediate relatives of the current U.S citizens can apply for their green card status. These include family members like parents, siblings, spouses, children, and even widows and widowers of citizens or other green cardholders.

Humanitarian-based Green Card

Not many people are aware of this subset. This type includes refugees, asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking, or other forms of crime and abuse.

Employment-based Green Card

Another common type of green card status is offered to workers and their immediate family who have worked in the U.S for extensive periods using H-1B or other work visas.
