DescriptionPURPOSE: The Phlebotomist demonstrates knowledge and skill in using the proper technique in collecting blood samples by capillary or venipuncture. Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Ability to provide excellent customer service, possess strong written and oral communications skills.Collects and prepares various body fluids for a variety of tests as directed by physician and governed by established procedures.Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testingChecks the test requisition to ensure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samplesEnsures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrityPerforms records and interprets quality control measures to assure accurate test results.Performs prescribed and scheduled equipment maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure efficient operation.Must be able to route and file laboratory reports according to established procedures.Monitor an environment of continuous quality improvementSelf-motivated and self-sufficientContributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needsMaintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, as well as safety practicesKeeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily suppliesAbility to represent Clara Barton Hospital and Rural Health Clinics in a positive and professional mannerPerform all other tasks as may be assigned.RequirementsREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCY:High School education or the equivalentPrevious experience or education in a health-related field helpfulPhlebotomy certification required after 6 months of employmentKnowledge of medical terminology and certification for CPR preferredAbility to multi-task and set priorities with strong analytical skills essential.Must maintain a safe and infection-free environment with infection control procedures followedMust have excellent verbal communication skills and represent positive work environment is maintained Strong planning and organizational skills with computer basics.Must have test results accurately documented to comply with accepted standards
