Wages

$85,000 - $90,000 annual salary range

Benefits

Generous Paid Time Off (PTO), plus 8 paid holidays per year and 2 floating holidays; competitive health plan with BlueCross, BlueShield of MN, dental, and vision insurance offerings: Health Savings Account (HSA) employer paid life and AD&D insurance with the option for additional coverage, and employer paid short- and long-term disability insurance; agency sponsored retirement plan with 4% employer match and immediate vesting, plus a 2% employer contribution after one year of service.

Schedule

This position works in-person during normal business hours and may include evening and/or weekend hours. This position also requires travel to and from community settings, as well as shelters and the homes of program participants and their families.

A Typical Day in the Life...

A typical day as COPAL's Communications Director provides an opportunity to develop and implement marketing and communications strategies to support COPAL's programs and mission. Responsibilities will include the following:
  • Ensuring COPAL's Latino-centric media perspective is embracing ancestral values, contains visions for building inclusive societies, and promotes the diversity of cultures represented through the Americas.
  • Developing and implementing detailed communication plans in line with the organization's strategies.
  • Overseeing the website, radio station, radio podcasts, video production, and social media presence to ensure strategic alignment and impactful messaging.
  • Supervising design and graphic elements to maintain brand consistency and messaging.
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive communications schedule, with flexibility to adjust based on evolving organizational needs and strategic objectives.
  • Serving as media point of contact, including drafting press releases, media kits, organizing press conferences, and managing media interviews and inquiries.
  • Managing the communications budget, authorizing expenditures, and ensuring financial activities align with organizational goals.
  • Regularly analyzing marketing and communication metrics to assess the effectiveness of strategies and providing data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  • Producing and distributing external communications materials, including signage and displays.
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with neighborhood businesses and organizations to enhance visibility, support audience development, and increase community engagement.
  • Representing the organization at media and community events and pursuing opportunities to increase local, regional, and national visibility.
  • Maintaining press and public relations mailing lists to facilitate effective media outreach.
  • Overseeing team members in Minneapolis and Chicago and managing international contracts with communications consultants.
  • Managing employee and team performance and overseeing the hiring process for positions within this team.

Who You Are
  • You have 5+ years of experience managing and supervising communications teams.
  • You have a degree in communications, marketing, or another relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • You have previous experience supervising part-time/contract staff and volunteers.
  • You have previous experience drafting and executing communication strategies, tools, products, and processes using a culturally sensitive, diverse, and inclusive lens.
  • You have previous experience in managing media relations, including proactive outreach and crisis communications.
  • You have previous experience with managing budgets and ensuring resources are allocated effectively.
  • You demonstrate expertise in digital marketing and communication.
  • You have strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Design Programs, website maintenance, typography, layout, and general design concepts.
  • You have excellent bilingual Spanish/English verbal and written communications skills.
  • You demonstrate the ability to make quick decisions, exercising sound judgment regarding communications.
  • You have the ability to manage time effectively, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • You have the ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
  • You are highly detail-oriented and organized.
  • You have a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet COPAL's driving record requirements. Please note that if the license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit (not applicable for new hires living out of state).
