PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The District Nurse administers and coordinates the health services program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification Requirements
* High school graduate or GED equivalent
* Licensed Registered Nurse
* Valid Texas Driver's License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
* Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
Special Knowledge and Skills
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills (oral and written)
* Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
* Ability to maintain confidentiality
* Ability to follow and successfully complete both written and verbal instructions
* Ability to communicate and to maintain effective working relationships with all athletic staff, administrators, other personnel, and the general public
* Excellent customer service skills
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Conducts school health services, vision, hearing, and other such screenings as may be required
* Dispenses prescribed medication with doctor's orders and parent permission
* Monitors immunization requirements
* Provides emergency care in the event of illness or accident
* Assists campus staff maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students
* Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters as needed
* Prepares and submits reports to the Superintendent/designee and State Board of Health
* Participates with school health services staff in developing and implementing a total school health program
* Assists health services staff in adapting the school program to meet the needs of individual students by communicating with the Special Education Department
* Serves as a team member and provides for all children as needed
* Serves as a liaison between the school and community health and welfare agencies and the medical profession
* Counsels with health services staff to secure needed medical, dental, or other treatment
* Participates in staff development as required by district administrator
* Attends local, state, and/or national professional conferences or workshops
* Provides professional development, training, and direct support of school nurses and health aides/designees
* Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs
* Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
* Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
* Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
* Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
* Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
* Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervision and evaluation of district personnel is not a requirement of the position; however, the supervision of students is required.
Equipment Used:
* Office equipment - personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position
* Communication equipment - radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
Mental Demands:
* Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
* Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands:
* Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
* Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds
Environmental Factors:
* Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
* Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
* Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
* Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
